I called Centreink at 8am in the morning and advised them I was going overseas for 5 and a half weeks and tonight I have received a letter saying "Request For Information, Please contact us." and giving a special number to call.
Has anyone had this before?

Seems unusual, but I doubt it would be related to your morning call if you received it on the same day.
I rang them yesterday with a notice to leave and I seemed to be asked more questions than usual.
There's more curiosity about where you want to go, I'd certainly be advising DSP travelers against repeated trips to the same country, at least without including a couple of side trips.
This year will reveal Centrelink's attitude to the frequency of the 6 week portability periods.
By 2014 we should have a picture of how many they are going to allow us in a 12 month period without threatening our Australian residency.

I will give them a call in a couple of hours and update, It's defiantly possible that it's in relation to my call as the letter is online and was only there at 2am.

You dont have to inform them but they will ask where your going, I get that every time except last time they passed me on to a big kahoona who asked me why do i go to Thailand so often?
during the same call ( leaving oz call) they threatened to cut me off . It was the departure phone call that triggered a revision .

The letter was from the Centrelink Payment Integrity Centre, They wanted to know about a casual job I started last month and if I was working under 30 hours a week which I am and If I was reporting correctly etc, They said it was just part of a campaign they are currently doing.

I'll confess I struggle with the correctness of using Centrelink and integrity in the same sentence.
A casual job would be good for residency ties to Australia... assuming it is in Australia... but could make a UP application difficult.

I will keep you informed. An interesting conversation with a mate yesterday. He's on the DSP and hasn't traveled for about 10 years. He took his Filipina wife and their child to the PI last year and returned in early December after 13 weeks, leaving his family with her people. After about a week he informed Centrelink he would be leaving again and was told... in writing... that he could not leave the country again for 6 weeks.... unless an emergency situation occurred. Well would you believe it, his father in law was taken ill with a mysterious illness and he was immediately cleared by Centrelink to leave the country for up to 13 weeks. (This was still 2012). |

Unfortunately Team; even with and holding "IP", they still want to know the proverbial, "Ins and Outs of a pigs arse!" However, the main difference being I believe and only after obtaining "IP', then you can start to tell them when enough is enough, and so why would you have to report return dates; when "Indefinite's" oxford meaning is: (Vague, Undefined, Unlimited, denoting an action without specifying whether its is continuous or complete!) I like the word "Vague" in this sentence, it adds creedence to my memory and mental problems; so I have become very vague when dealing with them now:)) As such they are to us on most occassions, but none moreso than when applying for "IP"; excepting of course, their non-compliance with telling you that you have actually been granted it? But I have one point that I believe was a big seller with them, and it also negates worry once you have "IP"or are travelling overseas! I named my sister as Nominee for correspondence only, and as she has a degree in mediation and is head mediator in NQ; then if problems arise she can act on my behalf without sanction. I know most of us dont need this, but it will allow you freedom of travel, some peace of mind and will definitely save money in international phone calls! Be prepared for war, as this site and Banjo and Banker in particular give you all the relevant information about their policies; it is then up to you to map out your own strategy as I did, and feed it to the bastards:)) Remember Team: Revenge is a dish best served cold, and its lonely sitting here at the table without you, so dont be afraid of them and come join me, Team!
