Thinking of seeing a bit of the country while I'm killing time here. Drive north, revisit a few old acquaintances, make a few new ones.
I suppose backpackers hostels would be the cheapest places to stay. Wonder if the older pubs still have rooms, they all did once.

I found out recently through another DSPer that we have I think 3 free or very reduced tickets for x country rail but here is the good bit. Lets say you want to go from sydney to cairns, you get the ticket ..and you can hop off as many times as you want as long as you want and get back on for no charge , makes for a great cheap adventure or one hell of a pub crawl

It's a good idea Zorro, I did this in Europe and the UK back in the day. However I have the use of small economical car and the independence is just a bit too tempting.

I see Ivan still makes the news occasionally.
Years ago I was hitching from Brisbane to Adelaide and was in that general area, one night a guy in a car went past me very slowly three or four times without stopping. Like a true coward I bolted into the bush when he was out of sight and never came out until daylight. It was before Milat's time but maybe he was working his way up to getting started.
I might put a notice up in one of the local backpacker's hostels offering a ride for share petrol.

Hi Banjo, 2 things, first, advertise for travelling companion/companions on gumtree. I've had some nice backpacker girls travel with me using gumtree. Second, when are you going to start travelling?

Not sure when, probably after Anzac Day, I'll put out a general alert with coffee invitations enroute before I leave.

Banjo, if you are on the road in Queensland try the historic Station Hotel in Ingham, the Great Western in Rockhampton with a sidetrip to Emu Park Hotel near Yeppoon on the Coast. The Woombye Pub at the rail station near Buderim is nice, if on its own. My personal favourite for a stay if you want Queensland as it was 40 years ago, is the Halifax Hotel (or Commercial) in Halifax. Most have accomodation. Just don't take my seats thar.

It's nearly 40 years since I was last up that far; I think another land mark, the old Pacific Hotel in Cairns, has gone now. I had my first experience with tequila in the front bar there, four of us drank a bottle apiece one afternoon with much ostentatious use of salt and lemons. I staggered across the road and slept on the seafront lawns, waking later to find myself surrounded by friendly aboriginals who offered me a reviving glass of flagon port.

The reason I asked when you were travelling Banjo is that I'm heading off from Cairns on the 1st May and won't be back till some time in July but if you're around then I'd love to have a coffee or beer and a bit of a chin wag.

What ever you do, dont let Banjo make the coffee because this is what happens... Attachment Deleted
