Hey guys, I've just applied for indefinite portability/unlimited @ centrelink if my application is accepted I'll be going to either America, Thailand or Bali for a year or less. Hey I might even go to all of above before I find a nice place to settle down to or maybe just visit for a few months then return back down under. Let's hope I get accepted I'm sure I'm about 90% to be accepted for indefinite not sure about unlimited. My question is has anyone here gone to america on the DSP or OAP? Is it a nice place to visit? I've never been overseas and I'd like to visit our close allies overseas and see america maybe miami, new york, los angeleas. and texas over a couple month period. I'm sure living on the pension @ 808.00 per fortnight is enough to be able to live over there as it's almost half the price living over there. anyone have any info about america or bali living? if so I'd be gratefully appreciative. thx - scrub

Whoops.
Me Scrub. I was married to a US Citizen earlier and spent 11 years in the USA. Admittedly that was a long time ago, 1967-81...that's about 15 years but about 4 of those years were spent working in other countries. And I have 3 kids in the US, 43, 27 and 23.
I have read all the replies and generally agree on the cost of living index, rents, food etc. However, like me, I would go to my 27 yo daughter and if things go well she might let me stay 2-3 months. I can mange on about $1600 or less focusing mostly on food, probably eating out most days. But that also means I don't have to set anything up...from there I could go to my son's, but then they might not want me there long term, but again I could get by for a few months.
But in your case moving around, not knowing anyone, I reckon that's going to be amazingly difficult. Apartments for rent come bare and the minimum lease is a year, sometimes 2. How about transportation, most small towns in the USA don't have transportation networks, everyone is expected to have a car. How about food, when you have to eat out 1-2 times a day.
Will continue. Have to go right now.

Me? Yes definitely, I have limited AWLR, and I am sure I"ll be returning every 6 months. Remember I asked about Social Sec Agreement countries.
But actually here I was replying to Scrubs who was talking about looking at a few venues in the USA and staying longer.

I like USA would not mind to live there, but how is it possible to get permanent status there? Tourist visa is just for up to 90 days. You need to get a green card if you want to live there permanently. Am I missing something?
