Just saw the program
He was on DSP then went on Carers Pension to look after his wife. She died. Then they put him on Newstart.
Bloody idiots
He is appealing will happen in October.
Will be interesting as to why he did not go back on the DSP

I thought that carers in that case was an additional payment to what you were already on? Not something I've really looked into.

He didn't go back onto the DSP because he didn't qualify under the new impairment tables. They reported he got a total of 10 points which means his impairments are relatively minor since he claimed (at least) two impairments (vision and hearing), maybe even more. The story was vague about just how bad his hearing and vision is reported to be.
What I want to know is why, if he doesn't qualify for the DSP, then why can his son claim the carer's pension for supposedly looking after him. His son should also get put onto Newstart.

I thought that carers in that case was an additional payment to what you were already on? Not something I've really looked into. There is the Carer's payment and the Carer's Allowance. The Carer's payment is an income and asset tested payment that is similar in amount to the pension that a carer can claim. The Carer's Allowance is an additional tax-free payment for a carer that is not income or asset tested. Carer's allowance is relatively small at $115/fortnight.

With that coverage there's a fair chance he'll get back on it.

For sure, one or two get a bit of public sympathy and Centrelink enjoys the publicity of giving them a break. Meanwhile thousands continue to get a raw deal.

I wonder, if the carer's payment is similar to the DSP, why he would risk going off it in the first place?

We had a case on here that I knew was hopeless from the very beginning. I ended up suggesting that they may stand a chance if they took it public but it never happened. You need a fair bit of front to display all your private life on TV.
