A point of interest only; just read in Bangkok post that there are 30,000 retired Aussies living in Chiang Mai. If that's the case I wonder how many in all Thailand? I wonder how many on gov pension also. Suggests to me that Australia must be on the nose for many people. Not the most livable place as many claim. Many more in third world countries also like Cambodia suggest even smellier perhaps.

I find those numbers difficult to believe. The Australian Age Pension can be paid overseas permanently, with some estimates suggesting that more than 60,000 Australians are currently receiving their Age pension overseas. www.ozexpats.com/content/australian-pension-overseasI doubt that half of them would be in Chiang Mai... Greece and Italy maybe.

BanjoI thought I read somewhere since I joined the forum that there were about 250 DSP in the entire SE Asia area at the time of the great residency kerfufle and if that translated year on year into OAP's then even over, say 30 years, would only amount to about 7,500. Call it 10,000 in the entire SE Asia area. There are some numbers on the forum that tells you where OAP paid members reside.

Quick search on google news, since this is always a hot topic in the murdoch press, has "More than 81,000 age pensioners and 6500 disability support pensioners were living overseas in December 2015" with "More than 17,000 Australian age and disability pensioners were living in Italy for more than six months in 2013 while 13,500 were in Greece, 4328 in Spain and almost 2200 in Britain."
There was an article that actually broke it all down by country that appeared in the last 6 months, but can't remember which rag it was in.

Thanks mikeySomeone, might even have been me, has posted on here, somewhere, even more detailed break down of numbers. But I appreciate that article you are quoting. One of the most shameful things I ever read on this forum was of a little old lady who came from Perth and she would go to somewhere North, maybe Bali, and she had Balinese grandchildren and a life. Some 'bazstard' found out and published a newspaper story and she screamed for help here.

Lynne, our member who refused an award for her help during the Bali bombings, was hunted down and lost her DSP. I check her FaceBook page regularly and see her Balinese family (at least one an adopted street kid) and pets that she now only visits a couple of times a year.
Edit: I'd like you to recall that before she had found us, she had been totally honest with Centrelink in the belief that they had her best interests at heart and would not take her away from her home.

Banjo, Sometime I used to think that if I could get that newspaper person but then I mostly think:- I hope she is okay. I get angry at that sort of stuff that is directed at a gracious little old lady such as her.

Yeah, we still exchange a message or two, she never went back on the DSP as far as I recall, she's wrecking her health working at not very nice jobs but at least keeps her family and gets to see them a couple of times a year.
The image of the little girl she rescued off the street crying for her to come home will stay with me for a while.

Yes Banjo, i though i read 20,000 age and 6,000 DSP in total a while back. It was quoted in an interview with the Australian ambassador. But they could be all self funded of course although i very rarely run into any on my regular visits but again, maybe they live in the burbs and i hang out in the tourist area. SO? ?

Back in Aus, I went into renew my drivers license, lady at reception gave me the form and when I went to pay apologised for not having my concession card on me. A few clicks on the computer and she said it had been on file since 1997.
Rang Medicare (30 minute wait) to check they had my correct address and they changed it to my new preference without comment.

My addresses for both are Australian. I don't ask about residency.

Are you in Oz at the mo Banjo? If so there are two smart ones away from the smoke and soon to come water war. Back in two weeks. Hooray. Although I am enjoying the good odd day at the TAB. I am a sad case really. Some are brain washed from birth with religion, others football but mine was trying to perfect the art of picking winners. Mum once said "if i spent as much time in the books as i do in the form guide i would be top of the class. Well I consider i am near the top at the TAB. No I don't claim to win I just lose less than most. But another 12 months away soon will save something for next year.

It's been a long time since l was here as I've been working on my health to go visit my children and live in the Pines now that l've achieved my Indef Portability. I had intended to ask if anyone had success when applying for 'section 24' and had any good advice b4 applying but some info here from dsp-ers have confused me, complicating I.P. of DSP and staying long time outa Aust. and residency issues. Am I just mistaken?Any clarification members
