l think the basics card is OK for those that volunteer for it or compulsory for those who have a really serious alcohol/gambling problem but l'm worried the government could end up extending it compulsory to everyone on newstart maybe even one day people on the DSP based on the assumption people on welfare are like children who are not responsible with taxpayers money. I think any government will have to be very careful about extending income management for a couple of reasons... 1. If you are on Newstart and are unable to manage your affairs then you must be getting close to being eligible for DSP; and 2. If they talk of introducing income management to 'regular' DSPension folk then the OAPension people are going to start getting nervous! The basics cards can only be spent at COles and Woolworths, l bet the CEO's of those companies are lobbying the government to extend the basics card to everyone on Newstart. That would mean almost 1 million captive customers.
