My file was almost complete, a huge document that cost nearly $100 to ship. The deleted pages all concerned "information received from private citizens" of which there were quite a few. I really need to stop pissing people off. You should NEVER stop pissing certain people off LOL Huh you too Boss the world is buggered as we know it

l was wondering if you want access to previous work capacity assessment and doctors report when you first did your dsp application and you send in the Freedom of info request, how long does it usually take to arrive ? is it free and do they usually post it or email it to you.

Is it best to request your whole Centrelink file or just the JCA report?

Personal decision, if you think there's something else that you may find of interest order the whole file.
I think they encourage people to just order their immediate requirements for costs, speed of delivery etc.
You can always go back again.

Correct however on a benefit, they usually don't charge you, in fact CL don't charge.
Also be v v specific and describe the docs you need. You can't say docs for the last 5 years. You must the name, date ect of the foc you need. You can say all docs between 2 May 2015 nd 2 May 2016. The law does not allow for what is called a fishing expedition.
Be as precise you can. If you know the date, say so. The name of the person who signed the doc, say so.
Finally under FOI they do have 45 days to grant your request. They must also help you with your request. That is if they are not sure on reading what your after, they will call and ask you.
So good luck, but remember they can and usually take months.
The govt sets it up and says we are understaffed. This is the only way they can get away with the legislation, time limits.
It's intentional.
Good luck and FOI when you need those docs orvyo correct their f ups

Sorry, when I mentioned cost, I meant cost to Centrelink, getting your file under the FOI Act is a free service.

Is it best to request your whole Centrelink file or just the JCA report? It is imperative you request your JCA. I cant emphasis this enough!!! You will not get your whole file. You must make a v specific request and state exactly what you are after. Gized

Thanks guys. I asked for the JCA report specifically, and stated the year. I couldn't remember the month. I'm hopeful that that's sufficient identification. I received an acknowledgement (same day) saying their 30 days to make a decision expired on 18 June but could be extended...blah blah...we can take as long as we like...

It rarely runs past the 30 days, they realise that if Welfare Rights or local MPs are brought in to deal with a complaint that the extra cost and inconvenience is theirs and it achieves nothing.

Update: I got an email asking me to call FOI branch yesterday - I called and we established I had the year wrong (they'd located the JCA but it was a year after I though). I flicked back an email saying yes, please, that's what I wanted. It arrived this morning. 8 days total.
Thanks, Banjo, that was relatively painless, and certainly quicker than I'd hoped. The hard part has been reading medical information about myself.

I gave my (Banjo's) FOI request template to a friend who inserted her name and details, specified a single document, printed it out, signed it and had her carer take it to the local Centrelink.
Her carer was told she must use a specific form(!) and they only accepted her written request begrudgingly after he insisted the form was not mandatory. My friend has not heard anything so I suspect someone tripped and her FOI request was filed in the shredder.
Moral of the story: emailing the dedicated FOI branch is apparently a must.

When I first got some files via foi I spoke to a guy by phone who was in Brisbane. Over the phone he said no worries and i got it by post in a few days. Although if i remember correctly I may have had to fill in a form first and post it before he rang me. But as I recall it was all quite easy.
