A MANDURAH man who fraudulently claimed close to $30,000 in Centrelink payments will be sentenced later this month. David Roger Reckwell pleaded guilty in Mandurah Magistrates Court on Tuesday to two counts of obtaining a financial advantage in relation to social security overpayments The court heard Mr Reckwell, 31, was on a disability support pension during the charge period between March, 2011 and July, 2013. He lodged forms claiming he was unable to work, having been born with spina bifida, and signed a legally binding document declaring he was not working in March 2011. But data matching between Centrelink and the Australian Taxation Office found Mr Reckwell had been employed for more than two years by a local pub. Mr Reckwell had been working 38 hours per week and had earnt $136,518.90 in undeclared income during that time. Counsel for Mr Reckwell said his client was very remorseful and had been under a lot of financial stress at the time of the offending. The prosecution has called for an immediate term of imprisonment and are seeking reparation of $29,944.82 plus $426.74 in court costs. They referred to the offences as “significant” and said Mr Reckwell had aided and abetted his wife who is also facing a fraud charge over carer payments alleged to have been claimed by her. Mrs Reckwell has pleaded not guilty to fraudulently claiming $29,944.57 while her husband was working. She will stand trial at a later date. Mr Reckwell will be sentenced on November 24. www.mandurahmail.com.au/story/2689714/guilty-plea-after-mandurah-man-fraudulently-claims-thousands-in-centrelink-benefits/?cs=288

l wonder if the governemt is releasing lots of these stories to the media ahead of the release McClure welfare reform cuts, if the public thinks the whole welfare system is being rorted then it will be easier for ABBott to get his McClure welfare reforms through and kick large numbers of people off the DSP and making thing tougher in general for people who need welfare

It's pretty standard, when Banker he was here he used to find one and post it nearly every day.
Personally I don't think they're constructive and rarely bother with them unless they involve an unusual point of law.
I'd like to see more "politician jailed for expense account rorts" stories.

Absolutely agree with Banjo . What is the point of further promoting these stories in the forums here? I understand the concept of free speech but really these forums are designed to help Applicants navigate the maze of walls that CL put up in the way of applications and maintenance of pensions.
Promoting acts of fraud inside pensioner websites would make CL very happy indeed.

What makes me angry is if Abbott is using the example of the small minority doing the wrong thing to try to justify harsh welfare reforms which could see large numbers of genuine people with partial work capacity moved off the DSP onto newstart to save the government money, those that are doing the wrong thing should be punished not everyone else

With reference to all , my point is simply that ACA ( A current affair , same as all Murdoch's media cronies ) has been used by the current government and Minister Kevin Andrews to demonize all welfare DSP and newstart recipients as cheats ,therefore drumming up or lobbying support against those recipients so whatever unnecessary or unfair welfare reform that they through the Mclure report want to introduce will seem to be what the public actually want.
My point of posting the link above is not to promote this , but to actually make our forum readers and supporters aware how A current affair is promoting welfare reform and welfare monitoring and in some cases surveillance of welfare recipients.
Obviously the welfare cheats are only a very tiny and insignificant minority of the total population of welfare recipients.
Less than 300 people have seemed to be cheating the department of human services out of more than 823,000 welfare recipients.
As frugle suggests , the libs simply trying to drum up public support to justify their unnecessary , cruel and generally unwanted and unpopular welfare reform proposals.

Yes people like Murdoch, reinhart and the billionares at the top end of town see the billions spent by the government on welfare helping the disabled and unemployed as wasted money, they would rather the government spend those billions on things like more mining subsidies, corporate welfare and corporate tax breaks.

I wish we could see news articles about how certain Disability job agencies have been found to be rorting the system.
I'm still stuck in this crap casual job because one of them let me down. And it's difficult to quit in order to look around for another job because I'm supporting the wife. Rent is high and bills coming in.

When I lived in Lao we used to sit in the riverfront bars playing the old Asia hands and teasing the backpackers coming overland from Cambodia with their new Khmer tats.
"Do you know what that really means? How to the Khmer spell wanker again? I thought និគ្គហិត had 2 ត in it....."
