Dept warns of eBay welfare crackdownThe department that manages Centrelink has vowed to keep working with eBay to catch welfare recipients who fail to declare their income from the website. Welfare recipients who flog their wares on eBay have been warned - the department that manages Centrelink is after you. The Department of Human services wants to recover more than $1.7 million in debt it has identified from people getting benefits who fail to declare their income from the website. It has investigated 95 cases since the "eBay project" - an anti-fraud program that allows it to match its data with eBay's - started in September 2011. In data released to the Senate, the department said 87 debts were recovered but couldn't say how much. But it has vowed to keep working with eBay to track more would-be welfare cash-converters. www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2015/08/25/dept-warns-ebay-welfare-crackdown

Department of Human Services Centrelink-eBay arrangement uncovers $1.7m in dodgy claims
The Department of Human Services has been using a special relationship with eBay to expose welfare cheats wrongly claiming $1.7 million of taxpayers money. The amount of undeclared income it has tracked down was part of its "eBay project" - a deal between an American multinational private company and the Australian government which collects the names, addresses and birth dates of sellers with sales believed to be more than $20,000 in the space of each year. The department, which looks after Centrelink and Medicare, has so far investigated 95 matters since the eBay project started almost four years ago and of these 87 debts had been raised. "The department will maintain its relationship with eBay in the future and will likely make further requests for data," said a DHS answer to a question on notice. "This will assist us to monitor the risk of undeclared business income in the future." DHS did not reveal how much of the $1.7 million had been recovered. The Department of Human Services has been using a special relationship with eBay to expose welfare cheats wrongly claiming $1.7 million of taxpayers money. Here we go again with "dodgy claims" and "expose welfare cheats"! I think it should be pointed out there is a lot of difference between selling your TV or a car on ebay and running a business of buying and selling goods on eBay. In fact I take my hat off to anyone that can make money doing business on eBay. As long as you kept proper records and declared your profits then you should not have a problem. The ATO have been checking eBay records for years.

I sold an item on eBay the other month, first time I'd sold something on there in nearly a decade. Damn fees for the sale were nearly $30. I won't be selling anything on there again.

Next time you want to sell anything try GUMTREE it is free to sell or buy, although gumtree is owned by eBay,this is free version of selling items without the expense.
