We had a few members living in Indonesia, mainly Bali. I think that out in the major islands some care would need to be taken in cultural issues. We get away with a lot in Buddhist Thailand... may be not so much in Indonesia.

When i used to go to Bali for Holidays I was looking at retiring there Hospital is expensive if you get sick They want up front money before they treat you after examination A good room with A/C was about A$150 and electricity cheaper in the villages You buy food cheap there have to drink bottled water only If you want to stay over the 30 days You will probably have to get a Visa Agent to keep you there I would have gone there if not for Thailand As it was only a 4 1/2 hour to Adelaide direct flight

to jim, i think if you wont to stay long term in bali,it is prob best to rent a house, price depends on where u wont to stay, whats available around u etc.if u stay away from the seedy side of bali an just wont a nice quiet lifestlye ,i.e no partying etc it is cheap enough here,in fact u will actually save money over the long term? i dont drink etc or go out much so i dont really know that side of it at all. rent a house away from the tourist areas prob about 2,500$ a year would get you an unfurnished 2/3 bedroom house nothing fancy but recently built. so buy a fridge ,gas cooker ,tv etc all up spend about say 2,000$ would see you basically set up,prob come here 1st on a visa on arrival an pay for the 30 day visa(extendable once for another 30 days),mayb do that a couple of times to save some cash. prob in that time u will meet someone trustworthy who will sponser you for a social visa(6 months max) stay. an take it from there? so after the inital cost of a house per year, elect about 20$ per month no a/c water 7$ per month. sat tv an inet bundle(20gb) 70$ per month. shopping say about 200$ per month add another 100$ for day to day stuff etc. roughly 500$ so allow 750$ per month to survive is easy,so what you can save is up to you.(220$ every 6 months for visa) air ticket every 6 months 500$ max.u can buy a mbike 1500$ or rent one @ max 100$ per month if u r brave enough lol. well thats my thoughts on living here??? the other way is to rent a single room(losmen) 200$ would get u a nice enough place( one main room and a bathroom with mayb a little kitchen but unfurnished)

Thanks for your answers. Bali doesn't really interest me anymore,I did stay there for a while but found that I was turning into a disgruntled ,alcoholic expat. I now spend most of my in Yogyakarta,it is much, much cheaper ie.I rent a room in a upmarket kost, hot water, western toilet,a/c, tv and WiFi for 600.000 idr a month(aprox $70)before I came back to Oz last time I took 13 people(8 adults and 5 kids) out to a steak restaurant.total cost 280.000 idr about $30( I can't even afford to eat out myself when in Australia) The people are much more genuine,it seems that not everyone is trying to run a scam. While they do get a steady stream of tourists, bules are still a novelty, especially if you are eating in a local warung etc. I have met some great people and made many friends Sure there are some cultural differences, but isn't that what living in another country is all about? I am nearly finished the paperwork for up application and can't wait to return

$70 a month for a room with those facilities sounds alright, similar in Chiang Rai would cost you 3 times that.
Good point about cultural differences.

Re:my room Just for the record, this is a room in a kost(which would probably call a boarding house here in oz) It's about 1 to 2 hours drive(depending on traffic,)from Jogyakarta airport,it's definitely not an area that gets a lot of tourists. It is just a small room with a bathroom attached and there is a shared kitchen outside,(I haven't used the kitchen yet, within 5 minutes walk there are warungs that serve any sort of indonesian food you can imagine and then some.also a Kentucky fried chicken if you get sick of ayam goring!) I paid 6 months rent in advance so that I could be sure I have it when I get back from getting my up sorted out Re:cultural differences. I'm in an area where 95% + of the population are muslim, and while the javanese are very tolerant and moderate,I follow a few simple courtesys to ensure I don't offend anyone. This is just common sense and good manners It's not impossible to get a beer, but for example the only place nearby that I can sit and drink a cold one is in the bar of a 5 * hotel for about $10 a bottle. Local made rum(chiu) is available for a few dollars a litre.Or there is the infamous oplosan which is a mix of industrial alcohol, solvents, over the counter medication and bug spray, over 40 people have died this year in the yogyakarta area from drinking this cocktail. Gotta run now, I will post more later as I remember and time allows. Thanks again for the answers, I still like to hear more about anyone else's time in Indonesia and feel free to ask me for any more details about my experiences.

I found that in Malaysia Chinese restaurants could serve beer openly with food, even in the north of the country where they tend to be a bit more religious.

Yes, there are plenty of restaurants and bars in the city itself, but not out in the kampung where I am. Lots of people do drink, but its not as socially acceptable as Australia or other parts of Indonesia eg Bali. When I first went to indo you could by beer in nearly every indomart or alphamart (think 7/11) but over the last 18 months new restrictions on the sale of alcohol have made it a bit harder to find. Parts of Jakarta run 24/7 × 365 , and make anything in Australia seem like a kindygarden.

Asian capitals tend to be a bit like that which is the reason that I live in the sticks.

.. just back from our regular holidays to Toba Sumatra and happy to confirm it’s still the world’s finest climate even with the water level down almost 3 feet (seems the wet was rather weak this year) and the burning has started early. Also curious ash showers at Berastagi which gives the laundry an added sparkle.

A common problem in Indonesia, we've actually lost a couple of good members over it. Basically your IP address is in the close proximity of people who are spamming the world from the comfort of their home. CloudFlare who has the finger on the pulse of most websites like ProBoards (which makes DSPoverseas.com possible) has condemned you by association and declared you a spammer. To be honest, all I can suggest is that you use a VPN or something like it that blocks your IP address. Give TorBrowser a try, it's a free download and while it slows things down you may be able to get away with just using it for this forum. www.torproject.org/
