Bear, thanks but curious whether a Ford Maverick was a rebadged Nissan Patrol, or vice versa? In my younger years I had several Range Rovers, starting off with a 1980 2 door, so when we out in the Brindabella ranges I sat inside and shifted to low range, while all the Jap owners were getting wet locking in hubs. onemoreHave diverted the thread over to the chin wag section. dspoverseas.proboards.com/thread/5960/ford-mavericks-brindabellas-sea-lake

I see that one AUD$ is worth about 22.35 TBT and about 37.17 PHP.

So what is the cost of living with you? if you can put in A$ also to compare the following.
1 avocado = 80 cents at most; kilo of tom's = 80 cents. 1 long neck = $2.80 in shop. A simple meal in a local restaurant between $1.50 & A$3.00. A phone call to oz on mobile about 30 cents a minute. 1 cabbage once for 20 cents.

Definitely a rebadged Pootroll mate. Ford had Effie Broncos, the Explorer and the rebadged jobbie.

A phone call to oz on mobile about 30 cents a minute. 1 cabbage once for 20 cents. nomadicUsing exchange rate of 37 pesos per OZ $ comparative costs are, Avocado is 5php each or a bit around half an OZ cent each (they are bloody everywhere) Tomatoes are 80 php per kilo or about $Oz 2.20/kilo; Long neck is 85php about $2.30 each; Simple meal in local is about 50Php so roughly about Oz$1.35 and would probably be the same as you; Could not tell you cost of mobile call to oz because I'm too deaf to use any type of phone but I pay 1400Php per month for internet which is about oz$38 per month and slow as but at least it is unlimited; We buy them but no idea the cost of a cabbage; Potatoes are 100php per kilo so about oz$2.70; Rice depends on variety and source but say average 50php so $1.35; Chicken is 150/kilo so $4.05-4.10; Pork is 220php so about $6/kg; Fish is 120php/kg so about $3.25-3.50; Cigarettes are sold here in cartons of 10 per carton with 20 per pack so 200 sticks and cost 680php or about $18.50; Eggs for extra large cost 185php per 30 or about $5 which works out to about $2 per dozen. I pay about oz$190/month for rent; Visa costs are 10,000php for 6 months so approximately $50/month but the kicker is you have to leave for at least 1 day every 3 years unless you marry a Philippine. So there is an additional cost. Much more but cheers Denis

Decided to do a net transfer yesterday of Aud. $5,000.00 to top up for visa application as I thought only a $12.00 fee. Sadly I went to the bank today and realised I lost about 7,500 baht with the difference between the exchange rate I got and if I had of changed cash. Over A$300.00. down the drain. Looks like back to big cash on Oz returns once again.

The rate is appalling, I moved money for the visa last year and complained but it's far worse this year. We seem to get a stronger dollar with Labor so we can only live in hope. The billionaire miners love it weak, they sell for harder currencies and cash up when they bring the money back.

I thought that when you transferred money electronically you got a good rate but obviously, I was wrong. growl!

Saw in another forum this morning that it has to be a savings account for a visa in Thailand, if you want it in a term deposit you need a work permit.

So in a savings account which we have to show for extension and keep Bht 400,000 for the other seven months; sounds to me like they want to keep tabs on how much we spend. Ahhhh no ...... onset of paranoia. Cheers bear

cash under the bed has always been the way to go. Not that I do this nor probably would recommend it but years ago "the go" was to buy, in Australia, opals or gold jewellery and wear it overseas. Australian gold nuggets, and they don't have to be big, also can be incorporated into jewellery pieces. I don't know about Thailand but in the Philippines there are pawn shops on every corner and I do buy local gold jewellery as a store of value rather than putting cash under the bed.
