I think the Reserve Bank is hoping to make Australia a cashless society sometime during the 2020s. Sweden is well on its way to becoming cashless. They think this will cut back on the cash economy and the like, but I don't know of many people on the DSP who have suitcases full of $100 bills under the bed. If anything a cashless society will hurt the rich more than the poor as they have more opportunities to access illicit/tax free money. Such a card would be unworkable for someone who as been granted UP and is living in South East Asia. There is also a loss of dignity that comes with such a card, it is like you are being branded as a member of the lowest echelon of society. There is a lot of trouble in the world right now. It is impossible for anyone to predict what things will be like in 5 years time ..... Cashless in ordinary economic terms isn't such a big deal. I rarely use cold hard cash anymore - in Australia. I understand how important it is overseas. The problem with the welfare card is how "cash" is defined. For example, the Welfare card won't allow you to transfer funds between bank accounts, something I do every fortnight as part of my budget. Only 20% can be transferred between bank accounts, the rest is stuck in the Indue account. This means that I won't be able to transfer the required amount to my assistance dog trainer, for example, or to my mowing guy, or to purchase cheap goods on eBay (eBay isn't a listed online merchant where you can use the card). The Welfare card is like being given a gift card which will only work at Coles, Woolies or Bunnings. You're hamstringed by not being able to transfer funds to your other bank accounts (that's considered "cash" in welfare card terms). When I looked into it I found I also can't Bpay my credit card bill. The list of barriers that would bugger my budget and my ability to pay small businesses who don't have EFTPOS is fairly substantial for me, and I lead a mundane life.

Wow, if the wealthy bastard gets his way, there'll be 100% no cash!! As if the 80% limit isn't enough already... Yes Twiggy forrest the unelected mining magnate who thanks to his liberal mates has control of national welfare policy wants all 2 million welfare recipiants including us DSP on his card and his not even happy that we would get a miserable 20% of our payments in cash he wants all 100% on his card. l don't know the hell why a mining magnate wants to put people on welfare on a card, maybe he wants to drive the aboriginies off their land and out of their small communities and into the larger towns as that may be the only place they can use the card and then he will be able to take the aboriginies land for his mines, another theory is his a right wing chirstian evangelical fundamentalist and thinks his on some mission from God to stop low income people form engaging in vices like drink , drugs and gambling

Anyone here seen the Minderoo Foundation welfare card advertisments in WA? Twiggy Forest has spared no expense in pushing his agenda. He's also running a survey so he can say the majority want the card.

I think it's not only how they want to take over completely of where & how we shop etc. Once & 'if' they succeed in forcing their card onto us, without any cash, this will enable them to track each & every purchase we make etc. Is he also doing this, so others can see who & who's not on welfare when shopping around?

The trial participants have reported stigma and shame because the card so readily identifies them as social security recipients.
When Ceduna had the EFTPOS system not working for 48 hours or so (please correct me if it was longer -- my memory isn't crystal clear on timeframe) the people with the card couldn't purchase the necessities of life and of course didn't have any cash in the kitty to get by while the system was restored. That's a disgrace.

They claim that this so-called healthy welfare card, is to prevent government benefits from being spent on drugs, gambling and alcohol. This in itself cannot be true, are we led to believe that each & every person who's surviving on welfare is someone who is a drinker, gambler and or a drug addict?? This is being used as a smokescreen to mask/cover their real agenda... $$$ of course is one motive for sure.

There are many problems with the card but the major basic one is removal of right of choice. Don't let rag papers dictate but social security IS a human right. Dignity is a human right, right to at least a basic standard of living.
The irony of the Liberals ideology of creating independence is this only creates a further nanny state.

Twiggy will track and scrutinise every purchase to justify a cut in benefits. He'll also note any monies that was not spent in the fortnight. If people are eating steak instead of 3 star mince etc. this will be a no no. Also, his survey doesn't give the option to vote against the card. www.cashlessdebitcard.org.au/

They could say (for example), that it has come to our attention, that you only spent a certain percentage or amount from your welfare payments on each fortnight, so the other quarter remains unused and it's not needed. We will therefore reduce your benefits, as you have no need of the full amount etc. This is yet another reason to avoid & oppose their control + privacy invasion card!

Yeah because god forbid people that can save money. The policy is violation on human rights.

I don't spend my whole payment each fortnight because my budget, set up by ASIC's Moneysmart, directs a set figure each fortnight to a "regular expenses" account to cover utilities, insurance, dog training, vet expenses, car rego and servicing...those things are quarterly, monthly, six monthly -- the money's gotta be there when the expense comes in so I use the government's own tool to earmark funds in a second account. Then there's a third account for medical expenses (the gap.)
The fact that all people need to budget for similar expenses is fair reason for the Indue account not to empty each fortnight.
I of course like my present system and it would be completely buggered by the card.

I just got quite a beige, half-ass*d reply from my MP, who is Labor. She could not give a damn about the card.

What ALP disinterest means is that it would get through. There is insufficient opposition in the Senate. The only thing truly preventing it today is the cost. Well, and lack of protest against it. I don't know anyone who has actually contacted their MP.
