After living here in Thailand for nearly 9 years , i call this home now.I have no intention of going back to my birth country,Australia.Do I miss Australia ?of course I bloody do, the fishing the clean air ,the food , the laid back life ,which I think now is getting harder for alot of Aussies. It is all the other BS which I dont miss. I and my wife are going back next year for a month , just driving up the east coast to show my wife how beautiful it is .

Spot on miow40 apart from food. Ok, sundried tomatoes in the only one and i could probably do them myself but the cheese and salami that go with them not easy to get where i am either. But as for regular meals i miss zero. But if Thailand had a TAB i would be in total heaven. But after 20 years not much to miss either especially the B.S. That laid back culture has long gone to greed and bigotry among other things and the crime that follows. I could make a list as long as your arm of the things that have gone backwards in my time related to it all.

Yes it is amazing how people judge Thailand and what's wrong , but as you said we can make a list as long as your arm about Australia .At least I feel safe in my house at night time and do not have a certain race breaking in demanding cash and your car ...Melbourne is crazy now.

Where I am in the Philippines, out in the provinces I cannot get salami, pepperoni, or any of the other things that go well on a homemade pizza, but I can up with that slight inconvenience.
What I also don't miss is the BS that is Australia now.
I recently went back to visit family in bloody Victoria, I didn't see the speed camera that nabbed me for doing 3km over the speed limit, so I have paid my contribution.
I don't know how people survive there on the basic wage, apart from energy bills etc. $1000 to register a car for a year!
They can have the place.

Yes it seems that all those living in S.E. Asia are far happier. Even those who are not on pensions. Who would have believed all those years ago that any Aussies let alone disabled ones now prefer to live in Asia? Only those of us who had/have never been here before. When i took off via Malaysia in 95 to visit a friend in Chiang Rai who had just got an Oz government job there i was very apprehensive about the next few weeks. If not for him i would never even have heard of most places in S.E. Asia let alone thought of visiting. Not even Nostradamus could have dream't up i'd still be here today. But same here today as when growing up in the good old days. Never lock the door (touch wood), no bicycle lock, (ditto), and cheap as it was back then. The funny thing is that the locals here aspire to be like those in the west. If only they knew. We are indeed lucky that in some of our not perfect circumstances we found happiness. So thanks HANK! You miserable Sod.

$1000 To register a car !!!Gee I have lost touch .My friend told me their rates have gone through the roof as well.
I found chiang rai 10 years ago. I was in a wheelchair and feeling sorry for myself . My Friend had a Thai wife as well ,and she had the best set of uuummmm you all know what I am saying... Anyway he convinced me to take a tour of Thailand.Didn't know nothing about the place .The guide picked me up at the airport and we started our journey .. from one end to the other end of this strange beautiful country .The strange thing was we visited the white temple which was amazing , not thinking I would be living 15 minutes(south) from it in the future. At the of my holiday my guide had a party for me with family and friends .That is when I met my future wife . My life never looked back again . What a wonderful piece of paradise I have now .She is my rock and without her I would still have been in that wheelchair.

I believe if it's a V8 it's around $15-1600, and recent news reports talk of $1200+ electricity bills. Thankfully mine weren't; but my house is only 60sq.m. & 4cyl. cars cost nearly $600 with Pensioner discount. Cheers bear

I wouldn't put too much personal information on the open forum guys, there's a "chinwag" forum, PM bear for the password if anyone hasn't got it. Rules still apply there, take a look at the new members section anyone who needs a revision.
