It's not just people have to dumpster dive to make ends meet; it's the waste of perfectly good food that was a valuable commodity just hours before that's now covered by insurance and considered landfill, not even suitable for pig swill.
When I was a boy the scrap run partly fed the swine, along with grain and snared wallabies, cooked up into a broth which smelt like it'd be worth eating by humans.
We live in miserable times when food that used to be allowed for livestock is now a necessity for humans, and the retailer sails on regardless; or should that be irregardless while the divers risk the long arm of the law! Cheers bear

I think it's illegal to feed pigs scraps now, no meat allowed in their diet at all.

I have been very grateful for the food I have been able to receive from a couple of places. One place interview us every time, ask how things are. Generally it is 4 weeks apart to get food there, but they put me on 2 weeks apart to be able to access food. However last time (about a month ago), the young guy (probably lives at home with mum and dad, is my guess)… he asks have things improved I just said I haven't got any outstanding bills at the moment. So he then makes the "executive decision" to put me on 4 weeks apart now. Guess what, now have some bills to pay and stressed about that, and I doubt I want to go back to that place for food. There really do not get it!

Rainy day I hope you don’t mind me saying but I would highly encourage you to go back. They obviously offer assistance so go and ask for some. Maybe next time don’t appear optimistic regarding your future finances. The kid can only assess from his own life references and to him maybe it seems you were in the up and up. Go back and tell them the difficulty you face and get back on the two week program please. You deserve it. Don’t wait the four weeks - I would go back ASAP if it was me. Asking costs nothing.

There really do not get it! Unfortunately they do get people taking advantage of them so I would call and ask to speak to the supervisor and explain that every four weeks is not enough for the situation you are in. I had a similar thing happen at the place I used to pick up food parcels for my adopted brother (not really adopted but it is a long boring story) after speaking with the manager I was given her personal mobile phone number in case any of the younger helpers decided I could not pick up food toiletries and clothes every week again. I know it can feel like you are being degraded or violated having to ask for these sorts of help but the top people working at these places really do understand and want to help......please let the higher staff members know that you still need weekly or fortnightly help and also let them know how the treatment you received has impacted on your daily life. I am not sure where you are but one of the best food parcel places I have ever come across is one that not many people seem to know about- every one knows of the salvos and st vincent etc but not everyone has heard of Helping Hands Mission....if you have one of those centers close to you I suggest that you contact them as they really are very generous and have regular massive donations from coles and woolworths as well as more local places.

Great advice from ann & mspurple rainyday . The young fella would have thought he'd just done the right thing; or as instructed. Go back and get what's righfully your due. Good to see you back on deck too mspurple . PM me if you need too. No need for either one of you to suffer in silence or martyr yourselves. Cheers bear

While I can understand the reason I'm not sure I could ever 'come at' dumpster diving. One of the crappiest changes that has occurred over the years is this business of food having a 'use by date' or 'best before date' which makes it mandatory, at the risk of penalties, for retailers to dump otherwise, in lots of cases, perfectly good food and is also part of the reason you cannot even feed it to pigs or chooks.

Denis-NFA Never actually gone in under cover of darkness but; one day after a shopping trip, the way to the car was by the back loading bay. Just so happens that's where the skip bins are located. Staff just happened to be dumping at the time, so I stocked up. Meat mostly; still cold. Bloody criminal behaviour, staff couldn't care less; into the trolley, into the skip......no skin off their nose, or so I was told. Cheers bear

Not overly proud of it, but yes there was a time I went dumpster diving I approached Bakers delight and asked for left overs to which they replied sorry sir we cant give away the food. No worries I'll just wait my chance I thought that night I caught them dumping bags of perfectly good bread and cakes, I'll have some of that I thought this went on for awhile until I sorted myself out.Moral of the story is a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do

Cheers bear LOL bear and itsmylife08I consider those situations a bit different because you knew the providence of the food. I mean you could see it being dumped. In my original post I was actually going to suggest that wherever you are is to check out the local Coles or Woolies to determine their dumping practices even to the point of 'slinging' a 6 pack to 'the boys' doing the dumping. Bakers Delight used to be okay in passing on left overs but it could depend on the attitude of the local owner or store manager. And your correct itsmylife08, a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do! Best meal I ever had was sitting in a food court in Canberra late one night just before closing and this little old heavily accented European lady and her husband wandered past and she said if I wanted something to eat just ask the KFC folk but you can't eat it here. A bag of chicken and I was out of there and I have always tried to buy KFC ever since.

That was the cold harsh reality of being on Newstart at the time, between that and the food vans everything worked out just fine, life has a way of teaching you a few lessons when needed and to appreciate the good times....
Cheers Itsa
