Email from Rachel Siewert Dear Bear The Lion King, Peter Andre and Forrest Gump graced our screens a whopping 24 years ago. A lot has changed since 1994. But one thing that hasn’t is Newstart. For over two decades, successive Liberal and Labor governments have ignored calls to increase Newstart, burdening people with more debt and financial stress. All of us should be free to live a good life, with access to a world class public health and education, an affordable home, and a strong social safety net. But this is not possible for people trying to get by on $38 a day. Sign up if you agree that we need to raise the rate of Newstart. The Greens have a plan to raise the rate, and this week I introduced legislation to raise Newstart by $75 a week. An increase of $75 a week would mean that people looking for work, disabled people, students, older Australians and single parents are more able to live a dignified life. But we need your help to make this happen. Right now, the Liberal and Labor parties are too intent at giving tax handouts to their wealthy mates and corporate donors to try instead of focusing on what our community needs. Can you help us call on the Liberal and Labor parties to do their jobs and raise the rate of Newstart? We know this money will go straight back into the economy, spent on goods and services whilst recipients are looking for work. At the same time we as a society are exercising compassion, enabling people looking for a job to actually get by whilst they get back into work. With your help we can make this a reality. LET'S RAISE THE RATE Senator Rachel Siewert Australian Greens spokesperson on Family and Community Services greens.org.au/campaigns/increase-newstart?utm_source=civi&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newstart&utm_content=26063

It costs $12,000 per person to have them on the welfare card, they could double newstart with that money, l guess theres no shortage of cash when it comes to punishing the unpemployed, but l don't see any hope of a newstart increase while the liberals are in government

Morrison is desperate to hoodwink people; the back flip on OAP is testament (pun intended) to that! Cheers bear

I don't take a lot of notice about Newstart, as I am on the DSP. They say Newstart hasn’t changed since 1994. Is that as a bare figure, or as an adjusted rate ?
Either way it's awful. But if it's the basic figure, and unadjusted, that is simply unbelievable !

The Libs will never do it. The political pendulum is set to swing the other way.

All the feelings i get from all I read is that it is really unlikely the libs can win and the public are being conditioned to accept a rise in newstart at least. it really is a pittance and causes more damage than good while it is so low. An absolute disgrace in a rich country. So much evidence but so many continue to deny it because THEY are rich. But slowly things are changing as the public see more and more homeless and poverty.

No disrespect to people on Newstart but over the years I have often wondered how many folk that are on Newstart have turned to crime just to survive.
