90,000 baht = about A$5,000. I'd prefer to chance it and pay the A5,000.00 up front if needed. I would have thought you could even get travel insurance far cheaper than that. 3 says in hospital with Dengue Fever was only about A$100.00. We'd all like to chance it nomadic but the post is what is being proposed by TAT because; apparently there is an extraordinary amount of baht owed primarily by tourists. I've read the news reports! If both of these measures become law; there'll be no more chancing. If you come as a tourist or I suspect do the in/out every ninety days, you'll have to show travel insurance. That's what I'm on at the moment. The thing is, travel insurance has to be bought in your home country before you leave. Luckily the policy I have allows for a twelve months extension while out of the country travelling. I'm trying to facilitate that at the moment. Cost for two years about $12-1400.00. However again, if these proposals become law anyone on an O-A (retirement) visa, will be required to show the insurance certificate when applying for the yearly extensions, along with the new immigration financial requirement of Bht 800,000 in Thai Bank two months before and three months after; and also, not letting the balance go below Bht 400,000 in the other moths of the year. As I said before; forewarned is forearmed & be alert not alarmed. Cheers bear

I've been checking out the Health insurance thing and the best I can find is with Luma Thailand. Although I'm not taking out the policy as yet; if you set your deductible to the maximum of Bht140,000, the yearly premium is Bht90,000. At least they will insure me over 65. The big question will be is it till I'm 99 or am I cut of at 70, 75,80 etc. I don't want Worldwide coverage, that's a big money factor! A nice affordable ASEAN only policy would be great. Cheers bear I just did a test quote for travel insurance to compare prices. For one year coverage, nominating only Thailand as a destination, and at age 66yo, the quote is $600 for medical, evacuation, and personal liability. That means you have to come back to Australia once a year to buy another Policy. So you save $3,400 to pay for the trip, and you get unlimited coverage in expenses, compared to Luma Thailands quote of 90,000bht [$4,000], for just 140,000bht coverage. That sounds strange only getting 140,000bht coverage for 90,000bht premium. Trouble with Travel Insurance is the companies want to get you back to Australia as quickly as possible, so that Medicare then takes over the bill, and they wipe their hands of you. If you refuse to return when they say, then they stop paying the medical costs in Thailand from that point.

That Bht 140,000 is the highest deductible you can choose. That is how you get the premium down to 90,000 p/y. If you only have a deductible of Bht 32,000, premium is Bht 122,000, Bht 0 deductible, Bht 139,000 p/y. The actual coverage is huge! Your trvel insurance quote is close to what I have at the moment; although my company allows an extension of up to 12months, which can be done online while still overseas. That will give me 2 years before having to go back to renew it. Like government everywhere, seems like they are splitting hairs over this. If we are nomadic on an O visa, we are travellers/tourists. If we are extending in country with an O-A, they want to classify us as residents. In my mind, we are all tourists/guests in the Kingdom. My idea at this stage is to keep getting my travel insurance. Go back & renew just prior to extending and show that if asked. Afterall, either your covered or your not. Anything else just sounds like shilling for the insurance companies to me. Cheers bear P.S. Now I'm shilling. Always read the fine print! This isn't a multi trip policy; it's for a full twelve months. travelinsurancesaver.com.au/compare-insurance/?START=01/07/2019&FINISH=29/06/2020&MAJOR_DEST=Thailand&ADULT_AGE=66&ADULT_AGE_2=0&product=Bare+Essentials&partner=compare-insurance

I have been unsuccessful in extendeding my existing policy because of:- "Subject to the full terms and conditions, the period begins on the date of departure, as stated in the Certificate of Insurance, from your home in Australia and ends when you return to your home in Australia or when the period of the trip set out in the Certificate of Insurance ends, whichever happens first." Going home for Christmas voided my policy! So, like many of you I'm now here and uninsured. I will buy the policy next time I'm back in Oz, and extend it; then unless I have a health issue that necessitates my return to Oz, I won't be going anywhere near it for two years. My dear ol' dad hated insurance companies with a passion; something he instilled in me at a young age; and is it any wonder. They're all quite happy to take your money, then drop you like a hot spud at the earliest possible convenience that is hidden away somewhere in their terms & conditions. I have found places where it's possible to purchase travel insurance outside of your home country, however all of the ones I've found this far are for multi trips, and only have cover from 60-90 days inside Thailand. The investigation continues, cheers bear P.S. Already overseas; here are some options:- www.comparetravelinsurance.com.au/travel-insurance-tips/travel-insurance-already-overseas
