Not sure if this is in the right place so please feel free to move if necessary Admin:)
I was talking to a family member who recently moved and had to quit the job they had been in for a very long time as their new house was over three hours travel from the place she worked at. She has had a bit of trouble finding work even with her great qualifications so she finally put her name down at centrelink and had to meet with the job provider. She has told the provider all the places she has applied and all the places she will be applying which is fine. The job provider told her to just volunteer because of her age so she found out where she could do that and decided she would rather do a course to get her into another field of work faster. She found the course she wanted to do as it will be something needed for a lot of the available jobs in the area, she enrolled in the course and paid for it while there was a massive discount on the course. She had her appointment with the job provider who tried to talk her into cancelling her course and waiting for over three months (doing nothing for her newstart payments in the meantime) then the job provider will pay for a percentage of this course which at this time will end up costing my family member more even with part of it being covered by the agency as it will not be on sale any longer.
I find this behavior from the provider to be very unhelpful and irresponsible. They are supposed to help her find work and here they are attempting to stop her retraining so they can get a big pile of money for getting her into a course she found and should help her get work in the area straight away. The thing that is so wrong to me is that people on NS get a bad name because of not getting work or not trying hard enough but here are the job agencies trying to hold people back from a productive future all so they can get a fee for placing a person in a job or course!
How the heck do the media not pay attention to this sort of thing that happens all the time with Job providers?
