I have been putting off going to the dentist as it takes so long to get an appointment and then I usually can not afford the out of pocket expenses. Last time I went they let me think all I had to pay was $30 then they would fix my tooth.......they completely drilled it out then patched it up and told me I needed to go for a procedure that was over $1000 and four hours away from where I was. This was after me telling them that I usually used a private dentist but really did not even have the funds for a check up at a private clinic let alone the filling I knew I was gonna need.......I lost that tooth not long after the work was done because I did not have the available funds for a root canal and the dentist refused to refill the great hole he made for the root canal I told him I was not able to afford.
Many people I know will no longer see a dentist here and they regularly travel to Thailand (or similar place) to get dental work done.....they get a short holiday and their teeth fixed for less than it costs here for the teeth alone. If I could I would do the same thing!

mspurple try putting $5.00 or $10.00 away every payday. Budget airlines are cheap as these days and in a short time if keeping a watch out for cheap flights you will soon have enough. Even Malaysia has good dentists also. I once got a return flight to Perth from K.L. for A$180.00. Yeah, I know how tough it is in Oz but you can do it.

What a horrible story and reflection on the so called "Luck Country"; that's had 24 years of uninterrupted growth, and no rise in Newstart. So sorry to hear about your predicament mspurple but; great advice from nomadic. You have said before you are scared to fly alone; but again, if you do your research and go to Malaysia, maybe I could come and meet you to see you through the process. Malaysia is easy; hop on in Melbourne, hop off in KL, clear Immigration and you get 3 month visa on arrival. Cheers bear

Whilst I was working in a very remote part of Malaysia I had trouble with a crown, so I was taken to Dentist near where I was working, the Dentist had done all her training in Melbourne and did a first class job on the crown, cost was $20.
While holidaying in Thailand I hurt my shoulder and had to go to a hospital in Phuket, first class service, very hygienic and I didn't have to go to a doctor to get a referral to see a specialist, all done in a couple of hours, and a lot of Australians are combining a holiday in Thailand with getting dental work done.

Thank you nomadic I am no longer in the same situation I was in when I lost the last tooth, the wait time for dentist will still be ridiculously lengthy but no where near as bad as in the city or any other parts of Melbourne. I will be ringing next week to make an appointment with a clinic I have been told has fairly short wait times. bear, I really appreciate your offer and may take you up on that further down the track. I know I am going to need a fair bit of work done in the future as kids and medication have really damaged my teeth, I would also like to get implants for the teeth that have been pulled and there is no way I could afford them here.....even if I could afford it I couldn’t justify the expense! My cousin recommended a clinic he has used....911 clinic I think it was that he has visited a few times now. He did say that pretty much most of the bigger clinics should be fine to go to.

And i need any excuse to go to Malaysia, my fav country. So I'll join you both to start a party after the dental work. Just been told there is a new dentist in my small Pai town so will go and get a clean and check in near future. Will let you know how it goes. Will beat 6 hours on a bus if OK.

If I was in Oz, I'd be getting a filling as an emergency that would not last long term. Here I will get a crown for a fraction of the price. Have always wondered why teeth are not under MEDICAL? When I had 2 teeth out in Oz recently I asked how much for an implant at the community health dentist. They said we can only give you a plate like 50 years ago. A$5,000 for a one tooth implant privately they said. So 10$K for two. www.abc.net.au/news/2019-07-03/dental-care-requires-federally-funded-universal-system/11260600
