mmett my understanding is unless your going to an agreement country, your wife will have six weeks portability. See more here:- dspoverseas.proboards.com/thread/1461#ixzz5roIdnaGQ "Is the Carer Payment eligible for Indefinite Portability like the DSP?" Best speak with Centrelink International Services (131673) for up to date info and possibly give them the third degree on the following. Note: A carer accompanying a DSP recipient with terminal illness should be regarded as going overseas for a temporary period and therefore may be entitled to the allowed portability period for the qualifying payment. guides.dss.gov.au/guide-social-security-law/7/1/2/10 Cheers bear

Why Thailand ? Think laterally ! I wouldn't mind living in New Zealand, myself. Although I hate the cold, I could go to the North island and it is possible to live there cheaply. No drought ! And they have a reciprocal agreement....

I reckon the cost of living is more expensive in New Zealand than Australia, the basic necessities, it is not a cheap place to live.

I think all of the agreement countries are "high income" as the pension there has to be something close to the Australian one.

Mai Khao Jai bear? I see India on the list. So how does it work if someone wanted to live in India on DSP? Do we get the Oz DSP or the Indian one? If it was me with no UP and getting the Oz DSP I would be off to India tomorrow apart from the other 30 which are most probably more expensive. I see it was only agreed in 2014. There use to be only 5 as I recall but now 31. So lots of options for those with no UP it seems. OR NOT?

I couldn't open it from the original link is why I asked. Cheers on the link but too much info for me this early as seems very convoluted anyhow. 20/45th of the pension in there somewhere. ??

Had a re-read and seems like good news(is that possible?). If you have been in OZ long enough you can get the full pension or part thereof depending on how many years working life residency with 45 needed to get it in full. or a 20th of 45 if that many ears only etc etc. So I'd be off to India at least if I was in those circumstances with no U.P. It is probably aimed at Indian nationals who have lived in Australia to get rid of them. Cynical? YES. P.S. Indian logic makes Thai logic seem logical so you'd have to be even more tolerant to survive in India. Best travel experience on earth, but to live? But better than homeless in OZ for sure.

From memory you still need to be severely disabled (20 points in one table) to live overseas in a social security agreement arrangement when on the DSP. It only differs from U.P. in that you don't need the zero work capacity for 5 years.
Of those 31 countries mentioned, only India would be significantly cheaper to live in than Australia.
