In this particular situation the HCC wouldn't make any difference... The medication in question appears to not be covered by PBS and so a HCC would make no difference to the cost of it.
We have known people who chose to use a non PBS covered cancer treatment when faced with terminal cancer, it was extremely hard to hear that PBS didn't cover the treatment but the (all too harsh) reality was that it was unlikely to do more than extend the inevitable by a short period of time. The cost to them was around $25k.
There would be avenues for support but there is a gaping hole in longer term sickness where someone isn't returning to work.
