Banks to begin culling jobs

AUSTRALIA is on the cusp of a white collar recession with insiders warning that thousands of jobs are at risk in the finance sector, after it emerged yesterday that ANZ planned to cut 700 jobs.

But the Herald has established the job cuts will total as many as 1000 by the end of this year, which will be more than the bank shed at the height of the global financial crisis.

They come a day after the Royal Bank of Scotland announced plans to close its investment banking business, leading to the loss of more than 200 jobs in Australia.

Economists have warned Australia is vulnerable to a recession this year with a wholesale funding squeeze in Europe raising debt costs for banks such as ANZ.

Experts say thousands of jobs will be lost from the industry this year as banks scramble to adjust to an era of low credit growth and higher funding costs.

It also makes it hard to find a job, when employers want to do the wrong thing, to save themselves money.


Twenty illegal workers found in Sydney

Twenty illegal workers are being held at Villawood Detention Centre after they were nabbed at a construction site in western Sydney.

Seventeen men from China, two from Taiwan, two from Malaysia and two from Mongolia were illegally employed as plasterers, cement renderers and cleaners at a building site in Homebush Bay, the Department of Immigration said in a statement on Friday.

Most had expired visas or held visas with no work rights.

Twenty of the 23 illegal workers have been transferred to Villawood Detention Centre for processing before they are sent back to their country of origin or citizenship "at the earliest opportunity".

Two of the other three were granted short-term bridging visas, with the third counselled and released.

Brian Parker, NSW secretary for the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU), said the breach came as no surprise, with employers all too often taking on illegal workers.

"This is a common practice that we find in the building and construction industry and it's got to stop," Mr Parker said.

He said the workers were being "consistently exploited", with their wages typically being slashed by $15 to $20 per hour.

"Our members should be outraged at the fact that they can't get continuity of employment.

"But here we have a company ... employing a significant amount of workers that haven't got the legal right to work."

He called on the government to inject extra resources into the Immigration Department to allow greater policing of illegal employment, while accusing the industry regulator as being a waste of money.

"The millions of taxpayers' dollars wasted on the ABCC (Australian Building and Construction Commissioner) would be better spent in ensuring compliance with Australia's Immigration laws."

An immigration spokesman said the department was investigating the matter.

Employers convicted under commonwealth legislation of having illegal workers face fines of up to $13,200 and two years' imprisonment while companies face fines of up to $66,000 per illegal worker.

Economy shed jobs at year's end

The economy shed almost 30,000 jobs in December, capping the worst year for employment in two decades and increasing the likelihood that the Reserve Bank will cut interest rates for a third meeting in a row next month.

The unemployment rate remained steady at 5.2 per cent in December, in line with a downwardly revised 5.2 per cent in the previous month, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics data.

Total employment fell by 29,300 jobs, surprising analysts who had expected 10,000 jobs to be created. The loss left total job creation for 2011 virtually at zero - making it the weakest year for employment since 1992.

One of the greatest complaints I hear from people about employment agencies is that they have no jobs, so why are we forced to waste our time and resources to attend them once a fortnight?

That attitude shows not that these people don't want to work, but they are annoyed at being harassed for not having a job, when there aren't any jobs to be had.
