I might (with help I hope) get up a sort of Ten Commandments that should to be followed if Australian residency is to be preserved. One would definitely be "Thou shalt not have a Thai/Cambodian/Philippine bank account".

Hi all
Just a bit more information. I am on the Carers Allowance & Carers Payment. 12 months ago I got a form from C/L to see if I wanted to go onto OAP or stop on Carers penison.
i rang C/L to see what would be the best on to be on and they told me they are both the same rate of pay, but I would still get the Carers Allowance no matter what one I go on, which is just over $100 p/f.
What they didn't tell me is if I go onto the OAP I would lose the $600 bonus every year that the carers get.
So if anyone is on Carers Payment stop on it and you are better off over 12 months by $600.

I second that. My son in on Newstart at the moment. They want him to go on DSP due to his constant medical problems. I said to him the other day just wait till they bring in the budget first as they will have changes. If he goes on DSP he is no better off, as they want to get him back to work. He is still going to be no batter off which ever way he goes.

True but in reality no sooner than he get on he wil be kicked off back to Newstart. Maybe he should try to do some training paid by the Govt. That might help keep them off his back for a while. Will be interesting what will come out of the federal budget. Hopefully they will leave me alone.

If you are on DSP a few months before your 65th birthday C/L will send you forms to fill in asking if you wish to stay on DSP or change to OAP... I had not been in Australia for three years prior to them sending me the form and the change over went very smooth. In saying that dont be surprised if things change... as we have seen so many times. All it takes is some prick in C/L to start playing with his/her key board amongst other things.

My question is that what happens on your 65th if you work the miracle and are granted Indefinite Portability and say live abroad now from age 61-65. Right now for "non-residents" they have a OAP clause requiring you to reside for 2 years back in Australia (say 66-67) before you can live abroad. So the question is will one be able to keep the DSP offshore? Or will they just convert without the residency requirement?

OK, my take on it is that you don't HAVE to go on the OAP. So if you get the portability why would you change?
Will the unlimited portability affect residency? Those that are grandfathered on the DSP seem to go on to the OAP relatively painlessly. They seem to lose the pensioner bonus and certain residency benefits like the healthcare card. Medicare cancels their membership after 5 years away but I think these things are easily reinstated if the person grandfathered once more becomes a resident... and, of course, loses the portability benefit of being grandfathered.
So it seems like some will get their cake, as long as they don't eat too much of it.
