Hey howdo, if you are eligible for assisted care and it suits you then go for it. yes, you basically sign your pension over to them and they 'give' you what remains, if anything.

A question guys. It has just been mentioned to me that I would be eligible to go in to a retirement home/complex and my rental and any other ongoing costs would be taken out of my pension. Do any of you guys have any knowledge of this? I'm right up on this, quite a bit of experience of it in the last year due to family issues. There is a whole range of stuff available, you can buy a unit in a retirement village, this is total independent living and run on strata tile type organisation up to the full nursing home/hospice bit. As nfa says, if your retirement is govt funded there's not much left after you pay for it. I tried to access public housing a couple of years back and put my name down. This was despite being told I had very little hope, even in the less desirable areas. A single male has to be in some sort of crisis situation with mental health or drug issues or he never gets to the top of the list. Parents/families have priority. A friendly receptionist at their office recommended lying/exaggerating my condition to the mental health people. I would still recommend all of our members apply for it though, it shows willing that you intend to live in Australia.
