A pleasant reply to my email....
Mr Borrowman, I represent a small interest group of Disability Support Pension recipients who prefer to spend most of the year outside of Australia. It appears that the Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs and Other Legislation Amendment (Budget and Other Measures) Bill 2010 will pass the Senate unimpeded and I was hoping you would inform us of any future steps you intend to take on your son's behalf, if any. Any advice you wish to offer us on contesting this unfair and discriminatory law will also be most welcome. Regards, Banjo
Thank you for your email. As to what my next steps are, you will be aware from reading the Committee report that all committee members thought, to various degrees, that the situation of my son and people like him who are intellectually incapable of representing themselves, should be addressed.
I propose to work with these sentiments to continue to pursue the issue and am hopeful that an amendment will be introduced in response to them. Whatever the success or failure of this, I will continue to pursue the issue politically, here and overseas as necessary.
As to advice, I'm afraid all I can suggest is to continue lobbying local members and relevant ministers and shadow minsters. As exampled by some of the other submissions to the Committee, a reference to individual situations helps to make the effect of legislation real.
Best wishes
Hugh Borrowman

As a 61 year old australian I've essentially had a gutsful of the place and the people. I get a DSP and I'm very grateful. But I'm also having a website built and am hoping to earn a modest income from. God willing and good marketing. However, I've come to the conclusion that it's just an illusion living in a country where the public servants reflect the value system of the country at large. Selfrighteous, arrogant, mean, vidictive and spiteful. I'm planning on moving to either South America, Sweden or Ukraine. Australia only has the illusion of gross consumerism. The main thing it's got going for it is plenty of booze, lots of tits in the streets, sport and all the profanity you can hope to hear. Oh, and did I mention you can bash anybody and basically walk away. If I could marry a woman in one of the countries mentioned, I'd have no need to go back to the place.

Borrowman is a man we owe a lot to in this fight. He single handedly stepped out on a limb and told the world that his department offered him hush money and compensation for his son's loss of the DSP. He bravely said NO because he wanted a solution for ALL OF US not just special treatment for his well connected family.
Wonderful bloke.
For those not in the know, his son is on DSP and Mr. Borrowman was offered a diplomatic posting overseas, and he is his son's guardian and his son would have lost his DSP if Mr. Borrowman took the posting and took the family overseas. The department of foreign affairs offered to slightly up his salary to compensate for this loss. He said no to the whole job! He TOOK A STAND in support of ALL AUSTRALIAN DSP RECIPIENTS and he's a brave man.
Let us hope that disgusting arrogant piece of work Rudd gets turfed out his behind and quits parliament in the next 18 months as the cobbled together hung parliament / deeal with the independents falls apart and or the twice unelected INSTALLED prime minister Gillard calls a snap election to vainly attempt to benefit from some temporary gain in the polls, fails, and then Mr. Borrowman can be installed as German Ambassador by PM Abbott just to spite Rudd.
I hate all public servants. But Mr. Borrowman is an honourable man who took a brave stand for us.
NEVER FORGET THAT.

You may find Sweden a little expensive. Feel free to join our group, the more members we have here, the more the chance we will be listened to.

Welcome to the board Xeem, Mr Borrowman's case indeed helped bring our problems to the public attention. While your personal opinions of Labour Party politicians are no doubt warranted, we've received little sympathy right across the political spectrum. I can't recall the Greens, supposedly the champions of the downtrodden, answering a single one of our letters and emails, and to be honest, I'd have a few sleepless nights if the Liberals were returned to power; their commitment to pensioners was definitely ordinary in previous governments. Happy New Year, our 50th member.

It certainly seems that Mr Borrowman has cut a special deal. I need more information on this, any links around? I thought he fell out with the ALP/government when he refused to accept the ambassadorship to Germany?

I would also like to know what has happened to Mr Borrowman. It occurred to me that it may well have been his bringing to attention his son's position that some-one got into a huff that we have been able to spend time outside Aust. Still, everyone has the right to follow what they feel is right, and I must say, it does seem ridiculous there is no exemption for people under guardianship orders. But, the same could be said for people who have the capacity to make those decisions, but effectively cannot. Eg ... their carer goes overseas and they have no other carer. They too have no choice !

You can hardly blame him for looking after his own interests. It may help us further down the track, they said they were closing loopholes and then opened this one. Vent your spleen on Mitch, he's more deserving of it.

I was listening to Mitch today, I want to ask him if he thinks that the loop hole that lets the likes of him , rort the system by occupying an important position and then just ignore people that need his help, should be closed . also ,does he think it will be necessary in the future for someone to be the son of a diplomat to receive the dsp.
