I wonder what they do if you don't give them your phone number and they have to mail you everything? Like someone I know.... ;D

Apart from a an after hours call from my branch asking me to come in the next day to walk into a trap set up to paint me as being abusive, I have never had a phone call from Centrelink. Just shows the woman was in my records illegally, to have been able to see my phone number in the first place.

Lol. They do get a bonus for keeping people off DSP. Is it any wonder that process would then become corrupt? Maybe that was the plan from the outset. By any means ... fair or foul.

It's just policy, I worked for the government back when all the state departments were down sizing and public servants that you had known and even liked for years were turning on everyone to protect their own jobs and ingratiate themselves with their superiors. If they could do that to their friends and colleagues what chance have people they don't know and even despise got?
This is the worst side of bureaucracy, they belittle people and turn them into cyphers so it's like pushing pieces on a chess board or shooting them up in a computer game. Solipsism gone mad.

I am currently waiting on a copy of a medical report I requested. I walked into my local office with my filled in FOI papers three months ago. I received one report on the spot and was told the other would arrive in two weeks. After two months had passed I rang and they said they would deal with it, a week later another set of FOI forms arrived. I have since rang them again a week ago and still haven't got the report. Is this just plain incompetence?

I applied for mine online, there was a form but I can't seem to find it. Under the Act they have 30 days to provide you with the file, incompetence doesn't enter into it. Go in, ask for your file, if it's refused or fobbed off ask for the decision to be reviewed by a senior officer. For what it's worth I do as little business with them as possible over the phone. they don't even have a number for me. www.welfarerights.org.au/pages/selfhelpforms.aspx

No flexibility for "rules" and interpretation here, 30 days can only be read one way.

Is this just plain incompetence? Sounds like C/L have something to hide. If they want to really stall you, they will tell you to apply again, maybe to a different department. If they keep ignoring your requests you can complain to the Commonwealth Ombudsmans office, who should ring them on your behalf. If that fails, the Office of the Information Commissioner is next. They have updated their information regarding requests on their website, so I will post it below for new members. I don't think the Online request form works anymore, but you can download one to print out. Keep a receipt or copy of any requests you make, and follow up within the 30 day periods, to keep them on their toes. How to make an FOI requestYour request must: * be in writing * state that the request is an application for the purposes of the FOI Act * provide information about the documents to assist us to process your request * provide an address for reply. * If you ask a third party to make an FOI request on your behalf, you need to provide a specific, written authority to send copies of documents to you care of that person, or to allow that person to inspect copies of documents containing information about you. You can use the Department of Human Services FOI request or you can send your request to: Centrelink Centrelink FOI Team PO Box 975 Surfers Paradise QLD 4217 freedomofinformation@humanservices.gov.au Fax: 1300 080 619 Complaints:Commonwealth Ombudsman: www.ombudsman.gov.au/Information Commissioner: www.oaic.gov.au/Centrelink FOI Form: forms.australia.gov.au/forms/servlet/SmartForm.pdf?formCode=CLFOI

Lol, love it. Had a similar experience on the day I got a copy of the medical report my disability service provider was trying to hide. I had to go to C/L for other business, and when I waved it in an officer's face, she asked me to give it to her to 'put with my DSP application'. I declined, especially since the Osteopath had told me it was the original and only other copy. She then told me that she was the manager of that branch, and that she would be the one deciding my claim. I again declined to give it to her, stating that I was on my way home to email it to the JCA officer. I later noticed that her name never appeared on correspondence from the manager of the branch. She then overruled my next medical certificate, and misrecorded its content. She turned out to be a Senior Customer Service officer. She panicked when I had lodged my 2nd DSP application, at a different branch, and rang me offering to revoke her overruling of the certificate, and let me have a month off seeking work while I recovered from my torn shoulder tendon afterall. When I ordered her to obey the FOI forms I had lodged locking staff from her branch out of my file and therefore second application ... it was cancelled that same day.

I recently returned from a trip overseas that was well under the 13 week time period. I called C/L straight away to inform them of my return and they asked me if I had any other trips planned and if I intended to be in Australia for the next 12 months. Are these the normal questions they ask you?

It often depends on the officer taking the call. I left Australia about two weeks ago and all they said was OK. I suspect they have no right to question you about your future intentions but then you have the right to tell them no, you have no plans at all. (And change your mind later).
