"I'm not sure it's that easy to be reinstated after 13 weeks to one year away unpaid."
It's not. 13 weeks after your payment stops, you're cut off DSP completely and have to go through the whole process of applying all over again, under the new rules.
Been there, done that; it's taught me to think very carefully about choosing to be 'independent' for any length of time, since the govt basically punishes that by putting you through the whole application process again (whether you're really well enough to jump through all the hoops or not), including re-submitting all the medical documentation -- even if it says 'incurable and progressive' in nice big letters.
And even better? They really push you to go hang out with their disability services network mates, even if you've already been to a bunch of them and seen that they offer no practical or financial assistance of any kind whatsoever; all they can do is talk with you, 'cos we all know disabilities are magically fixed by talking with a low-paid, barely qualified person with no particular skills beyond sitting at desks & finding job ads in newspapers... right??
