families are having to sell hard earned homes to put parents in nursing homes in oz. what alternatives are there in asia?
Ive been a member on this site for some time and after travelling on DSP for 8yrs in asia am considering moving mum abroad for a better life, without having to sell the family home and go into an 'old folks home'. I'm trying to find any info on doing this, and also may be able to offer some advice.
Im welcoming any families with parents in the same situation to join in and get involved in the forum as we all need more info regarding this.
please bear in mind: the aussie govt seem to be planning on stopping people from retiring abroad. they have already done it through DSP changes in portability, and the OAP may be next! fight for it as its your RIGHT to live where you want when you retire!
Research shows that for around $1000 a month will get an elderly person into aged care in asia. the establishments are modern with all the latest equipment and US trained doctors.
My mums situation isnt isolated. Shes 85yrs old and if I wasnt at home looking after her she would have to sell our family home to be able to afford respite. Ayear ago she was fine and still driving but now is slipping into old age with more need for help.
I'm planning on bringing mum with me to the Philippines where she will reside with my wife and 2 kids. She can rent out the family home in oz and wont have to loose it to pay for a respite unit in oz. In addition to this respite in oz will take her pension paymnets.
Im sick of the restrictions to DSP and am looking for a way out. We have been offered a 5 room apartment block to lease on a wonderful island only 5mins from a major city with 5 large shopping malls, white sandy beaches and an excellent private hospital.
In order to get off DSP we plan on renting the apartments and I will be able to stay permanently in the Philippines with my wife and kids and not have to bow to the aussie govt with 8k a year in airfares and residency problems if im abroad for more than 6 months.
so the plan is:
rent the units out to other elderly folks so we have an income. This should work well for all, as they will be getting into a family environment in a warm climate close to all the attractions o a small city and tourist area.
My mum will have other elderly people to get involved with. we plan on having a fully qualified live in nurse and doctors on call very close by.
weekly activities will include: movie outings, trips to the mall, bingo, beach trips, church should they want it, massage, manicures, pedicures and hairdressers, restaurants and tourist trips in an air conditioned van.
we would also encourage families to keep in contact via video link on skype whenever they want.
Its just a thought at the moment but I think it would be a good way out of the DSP restrictions Im facing and getting mum into a much better caring lifestyle.
After 8yrs in asia I can see that the elderly are much better respected there and would have a better quality of life. The ausssie govt these days is all about making money through higer and additional taxes and trimming back as much funding as possible.
heres some food for thought:
movies in oz: $15 in asia $3 (same quality theatre)
haircut (womens cut/style/colour) $90 in oz, $20 in asia
cable tv: maybe $75 a month in oz (unsure), $10 in asia
food: all beef/pork/chicken (fresh) $4 a kilo.
rent, very cheap in asia.
taxis, we spend an hour in a taxi for around $7
public transport - dirt cheap.
medical treatment in hospitals can be expensive if you dont keep your eyes on things but a luxury room in a new private hospital (with shower/toilet & kitchen) is around $60 a day. I extensively checked the hospitals in our local area and would only use the private option, its well worth it unless your young or not financial.
so whats your guys opinions? either way it looks like mum will be heading there and I will keep you guys posted.
any advice or comments greatly appreciated!
