What is the basic pension rate now, married and single? I think that having returned to Australia to ensure residency that I will end up with bugger all.If I manage to stay for the next four years then I will have 29 years in the bank.So if I want to live overseas then I get 29/35 this of a single pension. But if I have a young partner then I only get half the married rate- correct? How can I support my Khmer princess with this? Rents in Perth have rocketed in the six months since I was here last, studios that were $250 a week are now more like $330. I am off to cairns this week to have a look, it seems to be a lovely place with beaches and mountains and cheap rents. But there is bugger all work. However there is a huge influx of Chinese tourists with china southern and china eastern flying in.Now they are talking of flights from Vladivostok with farmers and tractor salesman wanting to recline on deck chairs on the beach. It's going to be like Pattaya soon, I am going to start a business with deck chairs, tuk tuks and jet skis- it looks like a winner!

Hello omr.
For the pension DSP or OAP it is presently per fortnight;
Single; $733.70 plus supplement $61,20 plus clean energy $13,50 .........Total $808.40
Partnered; $553.10 plus supplement $46.10 plus clean energy $10.20.....Total $609.40
Rent allowance now is $123 maximum single rate.
Every capital city in Australia is now unaffordable rent wise for pensioners.
I live in Cairns and its affordable and a pleasant place to live with no need for a car as there is an excellent bus service.
Studios here start from around $140 per week and there are always a dozen or so listed on ....realestate.com.au
The problem in coming to Cairns is where to stay upon arrival and the options are not good.
Backpacker places are all around at $25 a night, two or four to a room, and there are boarding houses slightly better at maybe $40 a night. The best motel deal that I know and first class at that is $55 a night.
Cairns is a bit depressed which is why the rents are low here. Tourism declined, but seems to be level to improving.
Centrelink dole line is 5,000 people but one has to wonder how many as in the line because they want to be, and how many are actively looking for work.
Those looking seriously for work are advised to leave for places with better prospects.
Any more information needed just pm me.

I am off to cairns this week to have a look, it seems to be a lovely place with beaches and mountains and cheap rents. Careful with Cairns, awfully hot & humid, lasting for months and every year it's getting worse. It wasn't that bad before. I'm really thinking to get the hell out here.

There seems to be 2 differeing basic pension rates depending on where you look. On the Dept of Human Services website it says basic payment is $712 /fn for single , while using the Rate Estimator on the Centerlink site it says its $733 . I just tried to ring them,....but i can only listen to Vivaldi for so long , and 40 mins is way past my limit.

The above rates are correct and come into effect today March 20, 2013.
Rent allowance is $123 per fortnight and applies at a maximum rent of $273.40. Since my rent is $270 per fortnight I am excluded from rent assistance maximum and am reimbursed less than the $123. My reimbursement is around $121.50
How is that for a bargain? My rent is less than the full reimbursement threshold. Not much of an apartment but perfect if one can adjust. Just a studio based on a motel style format with kitchenette.
Cairns really is a survival haven.
Adrian, I will pm you.

Far as I know, it just means if you get a job they will extend your payments to $1,000 extra. Kind of a bonus to help you off welfare and into the workforce. I could be wrong though, given what is being said above.
