Hi, just a question Can you still live in Australia after you've been granted unlimited portability of your DSP? Or do you have to leave and move to another country? And if you still live in Australia and have been granted unlimited portability, are you free to come and go whenever you please? And for however long? I'm trying to figure out the rules, thank you

Hi Sum:) Yes you can live in Australia mate, and you must have residency ties to the country in most cases! You can travel or come and go how you please, but they still like to have you check in with them; which is somewhat counter productive in winning your freedom and self determination, but that's the way it is. How long we can stay away without incurring the wrath of C/L's residency laws, is still undetermined as of yet! I don't think your the only one trying to work out the rules mate; C/L have plenty of difficulty determining them also? Cheers Sum...

Hello sorry if this has been covered somewhere else, if one has indefinate portability under new rules to go oversease and tells centre its permanent, Then returns to australia to reside again, are they held to the 2 year imprissonment before payments portable again, or are they exempt frome 2 year returned resident rule on payments like oap etc

Just keep extending your stay overseas for 6 months at a time. And if you need to return to Australia just advise them on the same basis!

Yes, it's something that you can't seem to get a definite answer on. I personally believe that someone who had indefinite portability is still a resident regardless of how long they stay away.

Just for further ponderings,
On the letter I received from CL regarding My Travel Plans they told me, as well as other things,
1. While I am outside Australia my DSP may be paid indefinitely; 2. After 26 weeks outside Australia my rate may be affected by the length of time I was an Australian resident between the age of 16 and age pension age; 3. When I return to Australia I do not need to advise CL of my return to Australia unless I am returning to live in Australia after a period of residence overseas.
In addition, my online CL account lists my overseas address as temporary.
Point 2 above is curious in its reference to the age pension!

Something I wondered about that letter, which is identical to the one they send you when you tell them you plan to leave the country indefinitely on the Age pension, is that after returning to Australia, and not informing them of your return do you have to let them know when you leave again?

Interesting NFA.
Does that mean someone that is age 26 for example, and Age Pension age is 65, a gap of 39, for that period the rate may change? Would that be to the rate of Age Pension? or would it decrease?
Thanks.

My take on it Banjo is that I don't have to let them know and I can just FIFO whenever. What would be interesting to know is can I access the Pension Card, increase in the pension supplement and rent assistance for the time that I am in Australia, but I am not game to ask. Yet!

Thanks for detailed post NFA, so It's based on how long you lived in Australia and how many years till Age Pension?
Calculations of the "Australian working life residence" is difficult, especially if someone lived all their life in Australia, and only just starting to look elsewhere.

Not so much the years till Age Pension but the years of residency since age 16. The point about years until Age Pension, and someone may know this better than I, but I have an idea that as the pension age increases the AWLR is also increasing (?).

The AWLR for full portability of the Age Pension goes up from 25 to 35 years next year. I'm not sure how they will work it, I'd say a good chance of people currently living overseas on the Age pension would be grandfathered.
