Which method is the fastest for a freedom of information request? Email or letter? Letter posted to canberra or dropped off to the local centrelink office? I prefer email aat a higher leves that is the easiest for me, but I may have to go through appeals so I want the fastest method. If members could share their experiences that would be great. roxane, thanks for all the work you have done contacting the pollies. dougandkas, thanks heaps for talking to Lambie for us and organising what you have done. desperate, congrats on your outcome so far, that is fantastic news (I am going through med review at the moment too, so keenly following the stories of others)

I applied for FOI last week and got a phone call today . She said it was too "general" ; as I was going to an appointment I told her to write to me ,she said it was going to cost "hundreds", but i did say that I wanted the whole file from beginning of my grant to present date .She wanted to nit pick through it to cut out any unnecessary copying I guess . Seems they are afraid of copying the whole thing. Will see what she writes in the letter .

Don't be surprised if they back off and send you the full file without further comment.

They did the same to me....wanted it to be more specific.
Finally I got a large sheaf of A4 paper.
Read it all carefully. It's amazing what you find : included was the revelation that someone had dobbed me in about 12 years ago for "buying and selling cars to make money I did not declare to Centrelink". And who wanted to remain anonymous.
Well, they're not, now ! I know who it was....a nasty housemate who had criticized me for buying and then selling one car on which I had used a spray can, too close to his car. Hadn't realized he was such a backstabbing snitch.

People planning on giving up others to Centrelink need to realise that in large files they occasionally miss names that they are compelled by law to delete to protect informers. Enough said....

It's interesting how you have to be specific when applying for file under FOI, yet when you have SSAT hearing your whole file gets sent without any input from you??? Mine contained some interesting anomolies, well heaps actually

Re "ask for information we hold about you to be changed or annotated if it is incomplete, out of date, incorrect or misleading" from the first post in this thread, well I've received my file from the FOI people of DHS and now I ask here to get advice on the form and style of my letter to the FOI team, which will be asking for changes to incorrect information on my file. Cheers, everybody.

Welcome to the forum Scarred. If you've found something in your file you consider to be incorrect then I suggest a phone call to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and ask for the correct procedure to follow. There may be a form involved. www.oaic.gov.au/about-us/contact-us

My file was almost complete, a huge document that cost nearly $100 to ship. The deleted pages all concerned "information received from private citizens" of which there were quite a few. I really need to stop pissing people off. You should NEVER stop pissing certain people off LOL

It's a new one on me Thomas, at a glance it could be taken for a government website, but it's not.
I don't really know, applying for your file isn't all that hard anyway.
