Just come back from one of my several visits to Bali Denpasar International Airport. The Visa On Arrival for 30 days has been US$25 for quite a while. This can be paid in any other currency, they just give you the change in local currency. They have stopped the on board or pre pay the VOA Cool, did you go see / do anything while there. Do tell.

Just a visit with a group of 32 including my daughter. Did all the tourist things, then 6 days to relax and have massages. For My Time. I did a cost comparison for living their. I found that Thailand won. So have to wait another 2 years to retire in Thailand. Till i am eligible for my OAP

You be surprised how quickly you go through the $$ in party mode anywhere in the world. I'd say check out some of the more third world back packer destinations, Vientiane, Phnom Penh, Mindoro, maybe Myanmar now it's opening up. I think you'll find that the 18 year old backpackers usually hang with their own age group so I wouldn't get your hopes up there. Yhe i know right, money runs out fast. ... too fast. & that's why id rather hang out somewhere in the 3erd world for a year or two then move on from there. less flights more road-trips. As for the 18 year old backpackers, ( we can dream cant we ) besides ... thats what contiki tours, ... Ibiza & Cancun is for' right. Cheers banjo

I doubt you would qualify for an agreement country if you had no family or other ties there. www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/services/centrelink/international-social-security-agreementsWhat you may like consider is that you could possibly live on a single pension in certain countries where the cost of living is lower. Check real estate/rental prices in counrties like Indonesia and Thailand online then work out what it would cost you to live on top of that. Remember that you have to personally maintain Australian residency to qualify for portability of the Age pension further down the track.

From what I was told several years ago, you are able to go to an agreement country for an extended holiday (and be paid DSP from here) so long as you remained an Australian Resident. OR you became a resident of the agreement country.
There is no need for you to have ever lived in the Agreement Country before. Also no need for any family or other ties to that country.
Some agreements might have more specific rules.

That's completely correct blacktulip. I'm going through the agreements now and their countries immigration policies to try and figure out where my spouse and I can live permanently and I can still get carer payment. It's really hard We are not sure whether to go to an agreement country or somewhere in Asia and live on his pension and I then work online to supplement the carer payment I would no longer be receiving. It's really silly these laws where the actual carer is not allowed to get indefinite portability with the person on dsp.

Some agreements might have more specific rules. This is actually the most interesting point I have read on this forum for over 2 years regarding Agreement Countries. The assumption of us all, including Centrelink, was that an individual wished to repatriate to a country of first citizenship, and thereby Centrelink could cut your lunch, as in get a part payment on their 100% from the host country. For example, you might go back to Canada, and the chief factors (public servants) would divvy you up, payment wise. Saving Oz money is the main notion. But if you apply to live in an Agreement country with which you have no affiliation nor residency nor citizenship, well this (if possible) certainly puts Centrelink on the back foot. Personally, I love the notion. Just pick the Agreement Country with the cheapest standard of living/exchange rate and Bob's yer Uncle.

baranghopeHoliday might be easy with Oz passport, but living in an agreement country might not be quite so easy. Don't know, didn't look into the living O/S bit, visa's etc

Hi Disturbed, Have you already obtained unlimited portality of your DSP. 1960 Nar ... not yet, 1960. Im still looking into it, ... seeing if it's worth it, now that Abbott wants to cancel I/P & all. im trying to weigh it all up & see if i should apply for I/P. will depend on how long i can live in another country for (RE:) VISA'S ect ect ... It's no good applying for I/P when Abbott has said he's gonna get rid of I/P & force everybody under 50-65 yrs onto the new version of the old Howard policy of work for welfare. If i appliy for I/P ... i will lose my pre 2005 saving provisions. Say i apply for I/P & then i travel overseas on a 30 day visa,, ... visa runs out & im forced to return to OZ only to find out that Abbott's going to cancel I/P the next day & that we are all now being forced to clean public toilets for 30 hrs a week under the work for welfare reforms. ( as was the case under the last LNP gov when Howard was P.M ) & Indefinite portability has now been scraped forever. That's why im really keen to find out wot country's have the best / longest visa's for Australian's ... Coz if Abbott does move to re-introduce work for welfare reforms for all people on Welfare including DSP Veteran payments ect ect ........ then if im am going to apply for I/P before Abbott scraps it ... Ill need to move fast.Get assessed, leave Australia & move to another country ... inform C/L of my new address ect ect, & sort my visa's out to allow me to live there for longer then 30 days ( 2 years plus ) before abbott's new policy's start. Do all this in the same week i was assessed ... an hope im overseas & in another country under I/P in time to be grandfathered as out of the country on I/P before the new rules kick in. However. It would be a total wast of time to do all that only to be forced to return to OZ after 30 days & then find out coz iv returned to Australia iv lost my I/P & the new work for welfare rules apply, from the day of any return to OZ. The more information i can source upfront, the better i can plan my next move. know what i mean. Cheers.

Disturbed, first of all I don't believe that they would target UP because that is very important for those that can't work at all. Second of all it is still your right to apply for UP regardless of who's in government or what might happen, being an alarmist doesn't help.

And not forgetting that invalid and old age pensions are specifically mentioned at Section 51 (xxiii) of the Australian Constitution.
