Hi everyone
I was feeling depressed and upset today, it feels our challenges just get bigger, so I decided to write an email to my MP. Here it is, if others want to write but can't be bothered figuring out what to say, feel free to cut and paste and tack on your name at the end:
Dear "name of MP",
What is your position on the proposed crackdown on the disability support pension?
I am aghast at the proposal to target under 40s, age discrimination is never appropriate. I have many friends in their 20s and 30s who are struck by all kinds of diseases and are unable to live without support - lupus, lyme disease, chronic fatigue syndrome etc who will be unfairly targeted. Even if they manage to live separately, they cannot hold down a job due to their illness, or they are unfairly discriminated against by employers. Why is it acceptable that such sick, poor and vulnerable young people be treated this way? Why are the disabled confined to a life of poverty? How is this a fair go?
Also, targeting mentally ill pensioners, as if mental illness is not as disabling as physical disease is also a concern. Our jails are full of the mentally ill following the deinstitutionalisation of the mentally ill, and our streets will be even busier with homeless mentally ill people if people are kicked off the pension and thrown onto newstart. This is a disgrace, especially for one of the richest countries in the world.
Please email me back with your position on these changes, and if you plan to be outspoken about them. The disabled have few voices in parliament because they are often too sick to even leave the house. You are in a priviledged position to help some of the most marginalised people in this country.
Please help.
Thanks,
xxxx
also, I saw someone put together a guide to the MPs in this section of the forum, which was really quite impressive, is it possible to get an updated one. I only sent this to my local MP, is it worth sending it to lots of MPs? Need some advice from avid letter writers!
