I just ran a few details through the HomeStart system. www.homestart.com.au/homebuyers-informationA single person on the basic DSP can borrow up to $110,000 for a $12,000 deposit. And yes, there were places available at this price.

That site is only for people buying a home in South Australia, however it has given me hope. Thanks Banjo. Someone told me that St George Bank does home loans for the same price as you would pay for rent......

Try the Bendigo Bank and the Credit Unions/Savings and Loans also. Check with the public housing departments in your home state to see if they have any houses going cheap, they are selling them off hand over fist in SA.

Sounds pretty typical: better help the 'battlers' who 'only' make $135,000 per year -- they have it so tough!! -- but people on a pension of under $20,000 per year (or worse, those on Newstart) are living the high life at taxpayers' expense, so no need to help them. Totally makes sense, right?? Does anyone know whether other states have housing loans that are open to pensioners? Or is it SA or nowhere?

this is a bit off conversation, but here in Tasmania the government has increased the first home supplement , it is now $30,000 for a first home builder, it was $15,000 but not many takers there, people are saying why would you lock your self into a 30 year mortgage when you cant even be guaranteed having a job for 3 weeks, and the government here are asking and cant understand why people are not flocking to tasmania to take up there offer, i wish i had there brains.

Is there anyone in Tas who'll loan money to DSPers, @terry?
Also, do they only give the grant for people building new homes?

the grant is only for new home builders, and there are conditions, and its now $30,000 ,but no one is taking it up, because of there job security, and i dont know of any one that will lend people on dsp money, but i would say there would be, with very high interest, and good security, but you would not be able to borrow much i dont think, may be get knee capped if you dont pay it back .
