Good points Ding. My take was that when I sold my house and car I had no house and no car. I could have left the money invested after paying the legal bills and an advance and probably still have received most of the pension. But I dislike paying rent and like to have a car to get around in. That accounted for most of it and airlines got the rest... it was back in the 4 return flights year days. A friend told me money burns a hole in my pockets and he's probably right.

the businesses I had prior to the hit and run. So after the reasonable settlement, the solicitors and medical fees took around half. I still had months of the preclusion period where I had to live frugally as possible. I was put on DSP effectively by the court system, rather than personal decision to apply. If you think the Aussie budget is tough - wait until you have to decide if you will eat - or pay for the electricity to cook! Jeez ding, I'm glad I didn't go through what you experienced.

I was one of the lucky ones. Because of centrelink I ended up divorced. But also because of centrelink my ex is still a best mate and I gave her my house as a divorce settlement and kept my yacht to live on. But because we have no other real family, we left the house to each other in our wills. But I also kept the granny flat for emergencies - completely separate from her life.
That raised a lot of eyebrows at centrelink and was the precursor to a legal fight.
The main thing though, especially for any younger DSP or other pensioner including OAP is, that if you have a substantial sum left after paying off credit cards, your car and house, it is better to have money saved and live on a smaller pension, than to spend it all and eke out an existence on a pension only.
I was lucky. My payout was just before the GFC and interest rate collapse. So I didn't have a chance to get used to earning interest.
