NRAS is set up for anyone in the house earning under 75k a year, once you've applied and got the house after a year or so I think that amount goes up to 105k. I'm sure anyone can apply but I think they are harder on younger families due to the damage usually done to the houses. I'm share housing with a family member that works full time and we split the bills half half, everyone of them. Because I'm far out from the shops etc I gotta do my shopping online... but I wouldn't trade it, nice built up estate with friendly neighbors and its not rough and the rent I'm paying is about the same I would for a housing commission joint. its a 4 bed 2 bathroom double garage house brand new with a big backyard. I've got 2 rooms, my room mate has 2. we've each got a toilet and bathroom. we share the kitchen and loungeroom but neither of us use the loungeroom. I got a room to sleep in and a room where I watch TV/mess about on the PC. roomie works nights so i'm up during the night and asleep during the day to keep out of each others hair... i'm lucky to be living here be honest with ya. otherwise i'd be in a caravan or maybe even on the street... saving a ton of money living ere too... for when the moment arises that i needa leave. There's some 1 bed studios that pop up every couple months in this area $110 a week decent studio units. I'm waiting for one of these at the moment to move into.. because roomie about to start a job and after a year her pay bracket will be to high for the both of us to live here.. and I can't afford this place on my own so i gotta go. this is an example of the studios but this 1 is a 2 bed: www.realestate.com.au/property-studio-qld-caboolture-409114023The studios are pretty much the same but about 3k-4k a year cheaper.

Looks like you've got it really good up there scrub. I'd love to be living in a studio for $110 a week. But i thought the criteria for NRAS is that you need to be employed upon entry, as opposed to housing commission. You've got me thinking about a move to QLD.

But i thought the criteria for NRAS is that you need to be employed upon entry, as opposed to housing commission. You've got me thinking about a move to QLD. Ring up NRAS and ask em.. I'm pretty sure you can be on DSP/OAP and apply. because I got a application in for NRAS on the DSP and it was approved so I'm NRAS ready and able to apply for houses.

Yep, it's different in QLD where an applicant has to apply through 'One Social Housing Register'. I was working when i applied for my NRAS apartment in NSW and the criteria was:-
You must have derived at least part of your household income from regular paid employment over the preceding twelve months.

Hi all, after discussion in another post and even though this is fairly off topic from the sole purpose of this forum. I thought I’d chalk together some information for people that are looking for cheap places to rent in Australia. It may help for someone returning back from overseas or maybe someone newly placed on the DSP or a long term DSPer that is in need of a cheap rental because of the housing commision wait times. I’ve searched around on www.realestate.com.au and a few other sites for some cheap areas in Australia that are some what affordable on the DSP. Out of every corner of Australia I searched the only cheap properties are mainly out far in the bush or far away from everything, So I’ve come up with two suburbs that aren’t. Victoria (Ballarat) Victoria (Ballarat) and some of the surrounding suburbs are extremely cheap and value for money. if you go to www.realestate.com.au and search Ballarat, you’ll find some affordable 1-2 bed units for under $180 a week. If you wait a while and search religiously you might find a apartment/unit that is affordable for you. These aren’t top notch houses, but for value for money they seem relatively affordable. You’ll be looking anywhere from $120-180 a week. Ballarat is only a short distance by train to Melbourne city and it gets very cold there but it is relatively cheap so if you are looking at making a big move out of state to somewhere cheap maybe Ballarat or its surrounding suburbs are for you. There’s also some other cheap suburbs in Vic. But I found Ballarat to be the most ideally placed it’s more of a city then a town and only short distance to Melbourne and it also has most of the things you’d need from a place like it. The other Location is Cairns.. Yep, Cairns. I think most of us know that Cairns is relatively cheap rental wise, but I’ve heard that the cost of food can be pretty outrageous but for the rental price up there it seems like it’s a well worthy shot. In Cairns there is a different range of options for when you make your move and you can move in up there for relatively cheap if you jump on www.realestate.com.au and look up Cairns and search for prices under $200. You’ll see a large range of properties pop up for that price point compared to most areas in Australia. Most of the properties under the $200 mark are already furnished though.. so you might find it a bit tough to find a unit that isn’t furnished but when you do they are always around the $150-180 rental price mark. Back to the furnished houses, you can get 1-2 bedroom furnished units/apartments in Cairns for under $180 a week that are relatively squeaky clean with everything you’d need apart from linen and utensils so all you have to do is bring your clothes on your back. I did some calculations based on the average rental up there and found you’d only need $550-680 for bond, $120-160 for a plane ticket and maybe a couple weeks up front rent to move in with of course the costs of linen/utensils ranging from a couple hundred. So It ain’t that expensive of a move if you think about it. I found the furnished units to be a good choice for someone that needs to get into a house ASAP and is willing to work on moving out into their own unfurnished unit after some time. &!! A big bonus, most of them come with pools! It would also be a good choice to just check out Cairns and see if you like the place enough to stay or ditch out and move somewhere else. Personally I’m heading up to Cairns in winter to scope out the place to put it in the back of my mind encase I need to move somewhere ASAP Cairns might end up being that back up place to move to. On a side Note, if you don’t like Cairns hot weather or Victorias cold weather or you just can’t move that far a distance for whatever reasons and you are waiting on the housing list in your area. Check up on realestate.com.au or ring your local NRAS provider to see if they have any listings for NRAS in your area or a closer by suburb. NRAS also known as National Rental Affordability Scheme is a cheap rental program for families earning under 75k a year (going of by QLD here) and they have a range of generally brand new houses for a range of cheap prices. You have to apply for NRAS on there site & if you are approved you’ll be able to go and apply for NRAS properties. The only downfall about NRAS though is most are brand new 3-4 bed houses ranging from $250-350 a week. But... occasionally there will be a studio or a 2 bed unit/studio that might pop up and those usually go for $110-$225 a week so keep your eye out. Anyone want to add anything else to this? Hope this helped somebody that is browsing this forum.

I've tried to edit earlier posts that I've moved here into some sort of understandable format. Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to "bump" posts further up the thread, unlike topics in the subforums.

Anyone want to add anything else to this? I did a quick research and I could find that the apartments only have electric heathers or no heathers at all. So if you guys are like me who likes to have a warm shower and to have a warm bed room, take into account a very high electricity bill.

Hey mate, i'm not sure where you are in Oz, but up in QLD (well i'm not sure here) I followed this link www.nras.communities.qld.gov.au/And checked my eligibility (this was a long time ago) and then it put me onto a application form and you apply for it chuck it in & they'll e-mail you back if you are approved. I haven't personally applied for any NRAS homes yet so i'm not sure about the process after you've been approved but I think you can ring the NRAS line and contact them and they'll tell you what to do when applying for homes/give you a list of homes in your areas and times to go to inspection. the house i'm in is electric and gas (hot water runs on gas) $50 a bottle or something usually lasts 3-6 months for hot water. all the other power runs of standard electricity. (may be different for each house though). Good luck with your application.

Yeah mate looks like you need to get in contact with the tenancy manager.
Not sure how to go by doing that or what not but if you find a phone number give em a ring and have a ask. all i can say not sure how it goes down since i'm up here in QLD.
