Hello lucky people with UP. I was wondering something. It's to do with payment rates.
if you're overseas do you still get the same payment you'd receive if you lived in Australia? (obviously minus things like rent assistance of course).
Furthermore - does anybody know what the deal is with agreement/non-agreement countries (i.e social security agreements) in relation to UP?

I get pension of $782.20 plus supplement of $22.30 = $804.50 per fortnight. Not sure about your other question re agreement/non-agreement countries but there is a bit of discussion on the forum. Funnily enough but I do not consider myself as lucky. |

the last payment i got while in oz was A$860.00. and i expect the same now back overseas. i made no contact with them for my month in oz other than requesting a new health care card with i received and is valid till 2017 and haven't heard from them in any way at all in the two years since i got UP. I believe my payment is the same as if i was in oz apart from the rent assistance etc. I can't check on my payment while away unless a letter to my Oz address gets forwarded to me with the amount on it.

My understanding is to have your DSP payable in an agreement country you still need to be severely disabled and have 20 points in one table. The one difference is you don't need to prove zero work capacity for more than 5 years to get it. UP is more flexible. I would say someone would only pursue the "Agreement-Legislation" if they failed to qualify for UP.
A while back I did see a list of the participating nations. None of them were in SE Asia unfortunately. I do recall the U.S. and NZ were on the list. Basically the agreement works both ways so people from those nations can also claim the DSP/OAP while in Australia.

That last statement I made might not be accurate. I am not sure if people from agreement countries can claim our DSP/OAP while in Australia. Maybe they can only receive their own country's pension while in Australia.

I know that the UK pensioners get paid in Australia but there's no reciprocal agreement.
How it works in other agreement countries is that Australia shares the pension cost, based on how long they worked there.... I think?

I can't check on my payment while away unless a letter to my Oz address gets forwarded to me with the amount on it. Nomadic, why not register to get Centrelink letters sent to you online...permanently ? I have had them sent that way for years. I can access them both in Oz and when overseas. And when I get a letter they inform me by email, so I don't need to keep checking their website. |

I have UP from last November but yet to use it for a few more months due to being trapped in Australia for other reasons but was told the rate after 6 months away would be $804.50 a fortnight but would be paid every 4 weeks so 13 times a year.
One thing I was wondering if say I inform them that I am going to the Philippines then a few months later go for a holiday in Thailand do I need to inform them of that?

I can't see it's anything to do with them where you go but when you ring them, if they ask, tell them your first point of arrival.
I've been to Laos and Myanmar 4 or 5 times since I left Australia and it never occurred to me to bother them about it.

The UK isn't a member country, if l wanted to get U/P so l could live there for 6 months and still get my DSP, would it be harder because it isn't a member country |

Thanks Latin dancer I didn't know that at all. Also Banjo, you say you get paid monthly. After 2 years on UP i still get paid every two weeks. and as i have said before I have not heard from them once in that time other than there usual post with amount updates on it etc etc. So I don't intend to contact them ever again other than next healthcare card in 2017.
To win the war against them was indeed a total new life. So again I encourage everyone to never give up. I am now in Laos surrounded by perfect mountain scenery with nothing to worry about other than the daily pain which i can now live with.
P.S. beer lao may even be marginally better than Leo. Sabai Dee.

Beer Lao is said to be the best beer in Asia.
I was switched to monthly payments when I had my pension paid into a Thai bank account.
It's up to people with UP if they want to do this but there is a considerable saving in fees.

While we're off topic, Beer Lao was the expat beer of choice in Phnom Penh. The beer truck used to have to go via Thailand from Lao for deliveries, and when Cambodia and Thailand were having their border skirmish, the Thai's refused to let the truck cross over. The great Beer Lao drought of Xmas 2008 was felt by us all.

hi guys just a few questions, if i may has any guys here have been given up , with bipolar depression anxiety and stress all are extremely severe was in rozelle hospital for a few months in 2007 for medical illness. im 62 years old and thinking of going for up,i have skin cancer also deaf in left ear i have been seeing a psychologist for 8 years and still today i vist ,each month forgive my spelling not much school as a young lad anyway i was just think about going for up , thank you for your time
