Does anyone know of someone on dsp getting a part time job and staying under the 29 hour a week rule but then getting taken of dsp and put on newstart cos they are working again?? Every time you ask them they say you can work up until 29 hours a week indefinitelty but im a bit wary of that. There website says you can only get dsp if you can not work more than 15 hours a week, so which is it?

We have a member here who has worked around those hours on a number of occasions without a problem. Apart from that I've never heard of anyone working that many hours or of any difficulty that they may have had.

Hi Larry, It all depends on when you started receiving DSP. I started on it in about 2000, so I am eligible to work up to 30 hours a week and not get cut off and put on Newstart. And in fact I have been doing so for the last 2 years. My eligibility to work this many hours continues.
It is a process that Centrelink call "being grandfathered". I have been grandfathered. If I work over this number of hours, my DSP is suspended....not cancelled. I am not put on Newstart, as I am working ! Any time during the next 2 years, if I find I can no longer work more than 30 hours a week, I can get my DSP reinstated.
If you started receiving DSP during the last few years, the number of hours has decreased from that 30. This number is what they now post on their website....you have said it is 15 hours.
If you are unsure about the number of hours weekly that you can work before having your DSP suspended, you need to speak to Centrelink and ask them about your own specific case...and if you like you can try to get it in writing.

Hi latin dancer. Thanks for your reply and I went on dsp in december 2012 and everytime i call they say i can work up to 30 hours a week or 29 to be exact . They said before 2012 you could only work 15 hours a week and after 2012 they changed the rules so you can work 30 hours a week but your telling me its the opposite? Im inclined to believe you because your actually doing it and the website says you can only get dsp if you cant work more than 15 hours in the next 2 years. I have a interview this week for a job doing 20 hours a week so i think i will call them to make sure. Cheers.

Hi Larry. The 15 hour rule only applies to qualify for the DSP, and the allowable hours for people receiving DSP was increased to "Upto 30 hours" so 29 hours would be the cut off. Here is the relevant answer on the Human Services website. "If you receive Disability Support Pension, you can work for up to 30 hours a week and continue to receive a part pension, as long as you still meet the income test. If you work for 30 hours or more, your payments will be stopped. If you reduce your work hours within 2 years, contact us and we can check whether your payment can start again." www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/enablers/centrelink/disability-support-pension/allowable-working-hours

Can anyone tell me if they have or know someone who has worked between 15 and 30 hours a week for more than 2 years maybe even getting a review in the meantime? I was told this morning that if you work over 15 hours a week for more than 2 years then you will get reviewed and probably get taken off because now you dont qualify for the pension cos you can work more than 15 hours a week, so i explained this to her..... currently my dsp 480 a week and pension card.... if working 20 hours and part pension for 2 years X amount of income and pension card..... after 2 years of working 20 hours a week i get taken off dsp and my 20 hours a week at 21 per hour is take home 405. You get to keep your pension card for 1 more year and then its finished. She said you might get a low income health card but i would have to apply.....Why would you work 20 hours a week just to lose 80 a week and your pension card? Where is the incentive? I dont know maybe its just me, but i think thats stupid. I think there should be a payment for people who maybe can work more than 15 hours a week but not full time. It seems abit of all or nothing approach..... complaint over

I been working 25 hours a week and got reviewed and now I am awaiting a further review
its stupid they say you can work under 30 hours a week but then if u do that consistently then u will get reviewed

Hi quantamranger I just started a job 20 hours a week and rang cl to inform them and queired the hours and she looked up the work capacity and said you can work up to 30 hours a week indefinetly but i dont know if she meant me or just in general. I expect to be reviewed soon. Can i ask you how long you worked before you were reviewed?

I doubt they have a set period of time, it will end on someone's desk and you'll hear from them when they get around to it... or maybe not.
Try not to worry about it, the best case scenario for you is a job.

I got reviewed after a year in the workforce with consistent hours of 25 a week approx.
I got told I might be called in for further review three months ago but have not heard from them since.
