According to the current rules Rent Assistance and Pension Supplement (and Clean Energy) is paid for the first 6 weeks out of the country. At 6 weeks the Supplement reduces to minimum ($22.50/fortnight), Clean Energy and Rent Assistance would stop. And if re-entering Australia all the allowances would resume. Rent Assistance according to rental agreement or signed receipts.
So in theory you could be paid 6 weeks=3 Rent Allowance payments each time you leave the country. That is if you established a rental while you are at home.
What are the chances of having a rent revue if you are out of the country? And if unable to provide documentation, what would be the consquences other than Centrelink taking back the money. Or let's say you have documentation in the form of receipts but you no longer occupy the residence.
Any anecdotal experience with that?

So you want to know if it's ok to claim rent assistance while not paying rent?

I did not say that.
What happens if you have received such payments and you are selected for a rent review and you are out of the country.

I have never had a rent review. And from what I have heard, unless you say otherwise, Centrelink assume that you are still paying rent on a property while you are out of the country. Especially now that the time they allow you to be O/S is shorter than previously. I don't recommend that you do, but if you forget to tell them, I doubt that there would be repercussions....disabled pensioners often have issues with their memory.
Don't update your address for a while after returning.

I did not say that. What happens if you have received such payments and you are selected for a rent review and you are out of the country. What happens depends on whether you are/were claiming rent assistance without paying rent.

It's probably more to do with paying rent but not living in the house.
I would say its about proof of a residence by receiving rent assistance, which of course is a residency based payment. I doubt it would be easy to con Centrelink into to paying you rent assistance without pretty good proof that you were paying rent.

When I traveled OS in 2004 I was paid rent assistance for 13 weeks even though I told Centrelink I was no longer paying rent or even staying at that address.
As for a rent review, id never had one until earlier this year (last year) when I got sent a letter claiming a review. I think I had two months or so to comply. It was no drama, I just sent them a copy of my current lease.
