A decent job at decent wages with all the benefits that provides is so much better than living on a pension. Oh absolutely. And trying to find an employer that is flexible enough to accomodate an employee with a disability is quite a challenge in its own right. For many, that may even be an impossible task. The DES that I was using has since disappeared and it does make me wonder if assistance in getting back to some sort of work isn't as high on this government's priority list as reducing welfare payments is.

What still angers me though is that while every person will agree with you banjo. (read public, clink, politicians). BUT in reality it is different. I have almost begged Centrelink/politicians for help in getting off DSP over the years but there has not been one scerik of help in 20 years.

I would however highly recommend that you focus on part time study, there's not many things more deflating than overloading yourself and withdrawing from study because it's just too much work. A manageable part time course however gets you out of the house, in contact with the outside world and when you obtain your qualification or pass a unit, it's a real confidence booster. Thanks for your input. I actually dropped out of a full time accounting course near the end. I'm thinking part-time would be more sustainable and more likely to be able complete a whole semester. It's a big ask going from nothing to intensive full-time study.

Apart from a few misunderstandings (e.g. a demand for my list of "shonky" doctors accompanied by death threats if I did not provide) this forum has never been about getting people onto the DSP or keeping them on it if they had any other viable alternative. A decent job at decent wages with all the benefits that provides is so much better than living on a pension. The truly stupid part is that a lot of C'link's rules make it hard to get into a position where permanent employment can become a decent possibility. I for one would love to not need the DSP anymore.
I'm going into the office tomorrow to report my taking an extra unit this semester. It should be ok if I'm interpreting the rules properly. I'll know for sure soon....

Stupid is too kind shermos. I have done nothing but try to rid myself of them for 20 years but their rules are the main thing that has prevented this. They continue to shoot themselves in the feet rather than Hank in the head. I would give everything i own for a public debate with him on all things he lies about. Centrelink really only has one agenda and that is to get everyone off welfare or at least get lower payments than "entitled" to and that means by any means other than helping us. legal or otherwise.

Just letting people know that after reporting taking an extra unit there weren't any issues. The guy I spoke to even told me the max number of hours has changed back to 30, but DSPers haven't got the memo. Not sure if he's right about that. muggins You might like to contact Satanlink and ask if studying full time in a modified degree will affect your pension. Apparently it shouldn't.

They keep telling us they want people off the DSP but they make many too afraid to risk study or part time work for fear reassessment and losing their DSP and ending up on $260 A week poverty on Nostart . My idea is to create a new tier of newstart , maybe call it ' newstart disabled' which pays the same as the DSP and its for all those with a disability or serious health problems that want to study, work or look for work, also newstart disabled would have no forced mutual obligation.any jobsearch study .volunteer activities people want to do will be their own choice

I like wombat79 but alas once you are on newstart they don't consider you disabled any more. Miracle cure they call it.

But I think that can only be received for a limited time nowadays. They should just reinstate it to the old way and all would be good.

Agree latindancerI have been on Sickness Benefit myself. Thankfully not for that long a time but glory be it is terrible if there is a time limit on it.

Thanx for the heads up Shermos. I've decided not to go ahead with study now for various reasons including the cost. Cheers.

Guys , I am trying to get more time over seas while doing a diploma at James cook university in Singapore , its sais on centerlink website as one of the options , any one know about this ? cripple if your study overseas counts toward your Australian degree you can go for the duration of the course I believe. Recently we had a member achieve this, and they are now on UP, studying in London. Centrelink weren't aware of this and had to get someone in on it from memory. Go for it cripple Cheers bear Below is a link to the whole two page thread:- Hi everyone! Just thought I'd let you all know I've received a conclusive answer to my dilemma, after many hours on the phone to Centrelink - absolutely couldn't have done it without your help! Bear, Tasjo and Banjo you were all correct - there was no need for me to apply for UP, and once I referred CL to the portability table Bear linked to and SSAct Section 1218 they realised there was a specific team within International Services that deals with this issue, called the 'Restricted Portability' team. This team then confirmed that DSP is payable o/s if you're studying as part of an Australian degree course, independent of applying for UP. So all good, apparently all I need to supply is a letter from my university outlining the nature of the study and duration of the course etc. Thank you so much again to everyone who replied, I probably would have acted on entirely the wrong information if it wasn't for you guys. Really appreciate it xx Read more: dspoverseas.proboards.com/thread/5413/dsp-on-student-exchange-conundrums#ixzz5PkQbSJZk
