As previously mentioned I have been granted the Old Age Pension as from July.
To continue with getting everything sorted, my next step is to apply for portability.
The question is, do I need to be physically in Australia to make the application as one has to do when applying for the OAP,
or can I call them from overseas?
Thanks all,

Thanks Ghostbuster,
Would I be correct in saying that as long as you don't stay out for more than 26 weeks then you are ok?
If you stay out more than 26 weeks could they come back at me and say that I have been out too long and now have to stay for the 2 years before being allowed out again?

You have unlimited time away, you lose some add on's after a certain time, but retain the basic pension. I've been away 5 years, one 9 day trip back to Aus. I just told them I was going the first time, haven't exchanged a word on portability since.

onemore if leaving for more than six weeks it is possibly better to advise them; it is the new legislation for OAP'ers. Not telling them, and if they can't contact you, you might get a scary letter on your MyGov account telling you to contact them and explain yourself. If you don't have MyGov you might go for money and not have any. Forewarned is forearmed. Cheers bear When to tell us your travel plansYou need to tell us you’re leaving Australia if you: are going to live in another country will be away for more than 6 weeks get payments under a social security agreement with another country came back to live in Australia within the last 2 years and started getting Age Pension since then Otherwise you don’t need to tell us about your travel. The immigration department will tell us when you leave and return. www.humanservices.gov.au/individuals/enablers/age-pension-if-you-travel-outside-australia/31171

i would just say i'm going and not sure when and where after i arrive in ??, when i will be back. if i enjoy it then maybe longer as i legally can. no need to tell them you are going to live in another country as such. At least that's my feeling on it. Tell them all they need to know. Nothing more.

I just went in to the mygov site and in the personal details section I submitted my travel plans, well actually my departure date was already there, so I just had to enter my return date, simple enough, however I will follow up with a phone call on Monday, see what happens.

Once again thanks Bear, The key phrase there being 6 weeks, I will call the International number on Monday. Cheers, onemore as nomadic said! I told them I was going travelling in S.E. Asia and I didn't know for sure when I'd be back. When pressed I said maybe around Christmas; then was told, "Oh you can stay away as long as you like, but I've put that on your file; so if you are enjoying it there, give us a ring around that time. A lot of people really like it over there and stay. We pay them monthly into an overseas bank account." I kid you not; OAP'ers are treated with some dignity. The six weeks thing I think is weird though; new rules! Now if you're on DSP and you're not going for more than 28 days, you don't have to let them know; but on OAP, going for more than six weeks, you do. Bizarre; cheers bear

They asked how long and back then I was concerned about 26 weeks stuff so said about 6 months. When I left Cairns from its International Airport the blokes also asked how long and again I said 6 months. Why are you going they asked. Holiday I said. Like nomadic and bear have said just tell them the minimum required but do tell them. The hardest thing I have found to update is an Australian address.
