Does anyone know of some kind of online database or list of charities that provide either financial assistance like Woolworths shopping vouchers, free food packages or even church groups that offer free hot meals to people doing it tough.
I live in the city of Moonee Valley in Melbourne and our local town hall has a citizens advice bureau that used to offer food parcels as well as $50 Woolworths shopping vouchers to anyone with a health care card living in the local area.
But unfortunately the citizens advice bureau had their funding cut so they no longer offer shopping vouchers. I was told the funding was cut by the federal govnt, so i complained to my local MP's office who so happens to be Bill Shorten so hopefully when Labour win the federal election the funding to Moonee Valley's citizens advice bureau will be restored.
My advice to any centrelink recipient who lives in the city of Moonee Valley visit the local town hall citizens advice bureau as you can get a list there of all the different charities and their services in the local area.
If your close to Moonee Ponds on a Monday night the Moonee Ponds Baptised church just off Holmes road provides a free 3 course dinner from 6pm.
On Wednesday nights the Essendon Salvation Army on Buckley street also offer a free meal from 6pm
In North Melbourne on the park close to Boundary Road the vinnes soup van stops from 7;00 pm to 7;30 Monday to Saturday to give out hot meals and food parcels.
If others like they can list their local area's charities and free meals on this thread.

Some local councils in Melbourne are better than others. Moonee Valleys citizens advice bureau is now all locked up and closed. The office they once operated out of seems to be have abandoned. One of the best places to visit in the City of Moonee Valley if you need to access the internet free of charge on a proper desktop PC, need free assistance with drug and alcohol issues or require free legal advice is the Wingate avenue Community Centre. There's also a department of housing office located within walking distance if you want to talk to a real person about housing options. wingateave.com.au/co-located-services My advice for any Centrelink recipient in the North West of Melbourne who gets one of those notorious robo-debt letters in the mail from the department of human services stating you have been incorrectly over-paid and now have a outstanding debt owed to Centrelink and/or your current Centrelink payment is up for review the first thing to do is call the Moonee Valley legal services free legal aid office at the Wingate avenue Community Centre on 9376 7929 and make an appointment to get professional legal advice from a experienced lawyer who is there to help explain what options you have and if suitable organise legal representation on your behalf to go through the proper legal channels to mount an appeal and fight a Centrelink decision at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. The team of Barristers Solicitors and Paralegals working at the Moonee Valley legal services free legal aid office get asked to help with legal cases dealing with Centrelink issues all the time, whatever problem you have they have seen it before. The bayside City of Port Phillip centred in St Kilda and surrounding suburbs seem to offer the best daily free meal services and free food parcels/vouchers of any Melbourne local council. Hopefully the below PDF list is still up to date with the services for the needy by different charity organisations in Port Phillip still happening. www.portphillip.vic.gov.au/default/Free_and_Cheap_Meals_Parcel_and_Voucher_Brochure(1).pdf

All you can eat set meal, main course, dessert and drink for A$7.50 for those on Centrelink. $10.00 for others. Vegetarian and the menu is different every day. Monday to Friday. delish

Yes, they are not spicy at all. Just very tasty Indian style vegetarian food on rice with popadoms. Water, juice or yogurt lassi and semolina with custard type dessert. The menu changes every day also.

Helping Hands mission does gold coin lunches (I think it still is $2 or there about) and also food parcels and clothing - the main site I know of is........ 492 Fullarton Road Airport West Vic This location does hot fresh meals lunch times and also has food parcels and clothing if needed. 18 Main St Bridgewater Vic This location does great food parcels and also will help out with clothing if needed.
They are also in 66-68 Oakover Rd Preston Vic, 26 Centreway Keilor East Vic, Shop 2, 2-10 Resivoir Drive Roxburgh Park Vic, 85 Hampshire Rd Sunshine Vic I am not actually certain of what these locations can offer but they would certainly help get you sorted out with food and clothes.
I will try to think of some of the others
