My friend told me that she heard a politician was saying in Parliament last week that people on age pension should only get it for six weeks overseas. After the six weeks payments are suspended till you return. Anyone heard that please. I can’t find anything.

Thanks for the heads-up ann We'll have to be Alert but not Alarmed as yet, to that possibility. With this mob anything could be possible, but as yet not heard anything like that. Cheers bear

I could never believe they would ever do it. Maybe some individual fanatical politician only but imagine the outcry. Really would be civil war I think. Even this mad mob couldn't do it. Could they?

I sincerely believe they could, they would, and they possibly will, because contrary to what we here believe; we are in a minority, and the majority will believe our pensions should be being spent in Australia to help fix the economy. Bear I'd suggest they would have to stop all overseas remittances if that's the case as well as refuse overseas pensions coming into Australa @jjj88 reminded me of this post I put up in May but I forget where I found it I have seen from time to time how some folk resent paying overseas based pensioners. Show them this:- Australia – According to the World Bank estimates, remittances from Australia could be worth US$ 16 bn – including US$2,922 mn to China, US$ 1,944 mn to India, US$ 1,182 mn to Vietnam, US$ 1,084 mn to the UK and US$ 1,002 mn to the Philippines.
The biggest senders of remittances to Australia are the UK (US$ 446 mn), United States (US$ 289 mn), New Zealand (US$ 248 mn), Canada (US$ 98 mn) and Italy (US$ 84 mn).Read more: dspoverseas.proboards.com/thread/6085/cost-overseas-pension-payments?page=1#ixzz5vMVXPdf4

Those figures above, if my eyes can add up, say $16 billion going out and only approx $1 billion coming in. I always thought more came in than went out. Any clarification on that? Or possibly I am confused with the amounts that we ex pats take out compared to what overseas ex-pats bring in? And if so then stopping OAP-ers from going for only 6 weeks won't affect remittances at all. Totally unrelated. If I am barking up the right tree on it all, that is?

An email to Rachael Siewert last night, saw the following response this morning. I have sent a thank you email and queried the eight week supplement cuts. I think most were already aware of the eighty year reporting thing. Cheers bear
Hi Bear I’m glad you didn’t stand on ceremony. I haven’t heard that rumour and it could we be that some politician was just sounding off during a speech.
There are some proposed changes to people on the pension overseas having to prove they are still alive every 2 years if they are over 80. Also to stop some supplement payments if you are away for more than 8 weeks.
I will check out the rumour.
Regards Rachel Siewert

Once again, I'll point out that I believe the majority of Age pensioners living overseas are in southern and central Europe. Many of their children and grandchildren live in key electorates and I suggest that their members would oppose any changes to the current system. I'd be curious to see what the World Bank calls remittances and how these figures are acquired as well.

I got it from a second source today, no rumours of portability changes in the corridors of power.

From another forum.
A friend of mine who has just received his aged pension sought advice beforehand from the centrelink experts in hobart. They told him 2 years ago he had basically 2 choices if he was living overseas.
1. Come back to australia 2 years before you apply for your pension and reside in australia for at least 13 of the next 24 months. When he applies for his aged pension he would be granted immediate portability.
2. Come back when you a eligible to apply for your pension. You will have to do your 2 years in australia, however you can do 3 months in oz and travel os for 6 weeks max. You won't be paid whilst os, but the whole 4 and and half month period counts towards your 2 years in oz.
My friend chose option 1, but says in hindsight he would of been better off with option 2. He still had to do 13 mths in oz, whereas option 2 he would have had to do 16 months in oz, but at least he was getting paid whilst he was there.

Re quote:- imagine that! Also from another forum:- a long dialogue re OAP portability, that won't actually be coming into effect for nine more years, ie the questioner is under 60. They were all under the impression Centrelink won't be checking their travel movements or passport data in respect of residency. Helpfully I posted the application form pointing out the relevant questions. No response. Funny little fellows.
