Hi I have been all over the Centrelink site and can’t see how long specifically a person on the DSP can go overseas for without their pension cancelling. Can anyone provide the link in their site please. All I find is them rabbiting on about payment stops after 28 days, I already know that. I need to know how long can a person actually leave the country for. Thanks

My understanding is for people without UP or a special exemption from Centrelink it is 17 weeks. 28 days paid and 13 weeks unpaid while suspended. If you stay outside the country more than 17 weeks it gets cancelled and you have to reapply upon your return.

The information is no longer available online and I believe a call to International Services (131673) will clarify the matter and be provided in writing when advising your travel. Cheers bear

Thanks, I did phone and she was nice and kept saying ‘only paid for 28 days’. I kept saying this person on the DSP and quite infirm and I was hoping they could go for longer. Took a while and eventually she said it’s 13 weeks. Only paid for the first four weeks.
Told me I should phone six weeks earlier to advise them to make sure the payments recommenced when we got back. Said there will be a letter On return cancelling the blue pension card and another saying the payments have stopped.
Said because I advised them six weeks ago those letters won’t arrive and payments will recommence automatically and a new blue card will arrive.
I truly feel it’s so destructive to not state on MY Governments website that the 13 weeks is acceptable. Soooooo many people on a disability pension take about two weeks to recover from the flight. It’s not always about the money Scmoo

Yes ann it used to be on their portability page, then one day just wasn't there anymore. Possibly they thought too many people were taking advantage of the law by paying their own way for an extended holiday. She must also be new, or they've changed the rules again; because it was you can go for 17 weeks but only get paid for four. On top of that you could go for multiple self funded 13 weeks away, up to six months a year before you were likely to fallf foul of residency rules. Go figure, cheers bear

Getting U.P. ann is what you need. Have you thought about applying for it? Maybe a bit of a concern if you were granted DSP before 2012 but after that then it may be worth a try. Others here will point in the best directions on what you need to do to get it. It was better than winning the lottery for me when I got it.

28 paid per year and then suspended then 13 weeks total until canceled then wait a full year to reset the cycle , you can squeeze another week out of them paid of your lucky and got a very very good story
