Cambodia embassy works to fly out Aussies
Australians stranded in Cambodia have been told to register with the embassy for an April 12 flight.
The Australian embassy in Phnom Penh is hoping to charter a flight out of Cambodia for more than 500 citizens who fear being stranded amid the coronavirus lockdown.Meanwhile private contractors say they are also making lists and drawing up flight paths for desperate Australians seeking to leave the country. Ambassador Pablo Kang said on his Twitter feed on Tuesday that his embassy is in the advanced stages of organising a flight from Phnom Penh via a secondary country to Sydney for Sunday. Cambodia is one of the few countries in the region that does not have direct flights to Australia, normally transiting through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok. Kang urged any Australians wanting to leave Cambodia to contact the embassy or the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade immediately. "We are working hard on flight options," he said. According to the local newspaper Khmer Times, a separate letter has been sent to Australians living in Cambodia, where borders have closed and all people are being urged to self-quarantine. "Given we are yet to sign the relevant commercial agreement, we cannot at this stage disclose the identity of the airline or precise departure/arrival details," the letter said. "But we would like to give you enough advance notice to prepare for this opportunity, and for us to provide the airline with an accurate indication of numbers," it said, according to the newspaper. It said tickets would be priced at about $US682 for economy class, $US1622 for business class and $US3868 for first class, subject to taxes and the exchange rate. It also said all passengers would be required to quarantine in designated hotels in Sydney for 14 days after their arrival. The flight is additional to separate efforts to organise charter flights home. Charter To Australia has registered more than 40 people looking for options out of Cambodia. Organiser Peter Gillard said on his WhatsApp page that the details of 50 people were being taken down and a second flight might be required. Cambodia has been criticised for its slow response to the coronavirus pandemic, however, attitudes have hardened recently. Prime Minister Hun Sen early on Tuesday cancelled next weeks's annual Khmer New Year celebrations. www.canberratimes.com.au/story/6715934/cambodia-embassy-works-to-fly-out-aussies/?cs=14232

How about emergency flight from Thailand as it is now far more dangerous in some parts than the virus. The province I am in not affected as yet but bear needs urgent assistance i imagine as it is Friday. Maybe he has a stash. I pray so. But i will panic buy here today just in case it becomes nation wide. Only 10 of the 77 provinces so far. thethaiger.com/coronavirus/cv19-asia/cv19-thailand/bangkok-bans-booze-april-10-20

Well a second flight would be required, my passport was in transit between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh when i heard about this. Travel agency said i should get my passport back by the 25th. Because there are also lots of holidays in Cambodia at the moment. Not sure if i'd go!, it's been in the back of my mind though, family members would definitely prefer i go but due to lack of tourists, i'm staying in 4 star accommodation at about 15 AUD a night. I get satelite tv and therefore abc news and i see lots of homeless in Australia and my family situation isn't great. I think for someone like me i could be on the street again pretty quickly in Aus. It's definitely in the back of my mind but my point is by the time i found out about the plane there was no way to get my passport back in my hands in time. It's not anybodies fault, it simply takes longer then westerners are used to to get passport extensions when you are not in a capital city in SE Asia Also how were Aussies supposed to find out about this?. Did the government contact dspoverseas?, i doubt it, they have my email, also DFAT Phnom Penh now have my email as i started asking them questioms about the flight. I found out through my cousin!!. Theres my morning rant, cheers Highlander.

Sending filghts everywhere No actually....if you read the story the Cambodian Ambassador organized the flight. The Australian government never sent it. Though as highlander4000 pointed out above; it's only useful if you know about it.

Less cases here, better accommodation, beer, food and weather even. Don't want to return even if it was free. Would be nice to get to my preferred location but clean air with best ocean views wold be envied by many in oz at any time let alone now. No growling here at all. 4* in Siem Reap even better than my 3* here. Do you have buffet breakfast and a pool? Neither here.
