Scott Morrison shouldn't get to decide who lives with dignity.
But his coronavirus response has left millions of older Australians out in the cold – struggling to put food on the table and to cover essential medical costs.
The Age Pension was excluded from support increases – discriminating based only on age.
In the past few weeks, our campaign to increase the Age Pension has gone viral. Clearly, people want pensioners to be able to live with dignity.
Increases to JobSeeker and JobKeeper show that if we make our demands loud and clear – public pressure can have a major impact on public policy.
It isn't just pensioners who have been excluded.
Disabled people and carers were cruelly left out of the supplement, despite the skyrocketing costs specific to their situation.1 Migrants on temporary visas were denied JobSeeker and JobKeeper.2 And many casual workers were forced to keep working without support – despite the health risks.3
We need a recovery in which nobody gets left behind.
And for pensioners that means an additional $127 per week to bring their standard of living up to the JobSeeker supplement. Rather than bringing JobSeekers down to the inadequate pension level – we must push for a dignified income for all.
With the Government encouraging people to clear out their retirement funds in response to coronavirus, it is more vital than ever to guarantee a decent Age Pension.
Since this crisis began, things that once seemed impossible have come into reach. But experts are warning that the economy is headed off a cliff.
An increase to the Age Pension is a practical, immediate step the Government could take to support older Australians, and support local shops and businesses at the same time. Will you join thousands of GetUp members in signing the petition for a fair go for pensioners?
As millions of people are being stood down at work, the Government must guarantee liveable income support to everyone – including retirees on an Age Pension.
Many pensioners were already living in indignity and poverty, and it's only gotten worse. But rather than implement an increase to the Age Pension, conservatives in the Government want to use the Age Pension as an excuse to slash JobSeeker.
The good news? It's clear that with public pressure, the Government will spend on things that matter.
Can you sign on to the growing demand to increase the Age Pension now?
