Note: this is a podcastCan welfare payments inoculate Australia against inequality? The boost in JobSeeker benefits earlier this year, combined with JobKeeper payments to keep workers connected with employment, have helped pay the bills for millions of Australians and thousands of businesses. But both payments were always designed to be temporary. At the end of September, these schemes will be cut back by $300 per fortnight. Some argue that the payments are unaffordable in the long term, while others believe they represent a chance to counteract growing inequality in Australia, which the pandemic has only exacerbated. Guests: Kasy Chambers, Executive Director of Anglicare Australia Professor Fran Baum, Director of the Southgate Institute for Health, Society and Equity at Flinders University Duration: 20min 34sec Broadcast: Wed 16 Sep 2020, 9:06am www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/lifematters/can-welfare-payments-inoculate-australia-against-inequality/12667816?fbclid=IwAR1rwFq--chply1pduQINk22jITTUkzEU52vjyB9jxKJvJDJzyoPmVRD2FQ
