Ok, I'm baaaaack from quite a while on hold with International. THE NEWS IS GOOD. The lady said that if ANY permanent resident lives overseas on the AGE pension or DSP unlimited portability they will receive payments till they die. It goes without saying that every individual should contact them direct to get specific confirmation given each person has a different history etc. So the news is that these payments are for life - for permanent residents and citizens. Very civilized in my opinion. Hope this puts some minds at rest.
(I will never be shocked to find this changes over time. Get naturalised, why take a chance).

I always thought that this was already the case.
The problem lies in coming back to Australia after more than a few years overseas...if you need medical care, you may find that they have bumped you off Medicare. Which seems a bit odd. What do they do ? Turn you away from hospital ? Or treat you and then try to bill you, even though you have no money ?

My friend returned to Oz in January 2020 after about 10 years living overseas. Walked straight into the Centrelink office, they phoned International and they agreed she was back to stay and got her Medicare reinstated that same day.
International are the ones that had the power to do it, not the local Centrelink office or Medicare. International got it sorted in one phone call for her.
She had only been back once in all that time

Ok, cool. I guess a person could be back to stay and then change their mind ? But what would they do next time, I wonder ?
