Cheers cert. I now have an excuse to have a beer. How did you get DSP and I.P. without any sort of fight is what we would all like to know. We have others trying to get DSP for 2 years and still not on it. You are either dead or a miracle worker. well done either way.

Cheers cert. I now have an excuse to have a beer. How did you get DSP and I.P. without any sort of fight is what we would all like to know. We have others trying to get DSP for 2 years and still not on it. You are either dead or a miracle worker. well done either way. Nomadic I’m neither dead or a miracle worker I’m just 36 years old and soon to be residing in Thailand once boarders open on July 1 i will try to seek an exemption from the Australian government to leave. I didn’t have any issues in getting either the DSP and than I/P overall just under 5 months to be approved for both. I tell everybody there is no secret to getting the DSP Centrelink tell you exactly what they are looking for and from whom eg: what treating specialist are needed to confirm the diagnosis etc and they tell you what they are looking for in regards to functional impairment, every level of functional impairment has an example underneath it! People believe that they are diagnosed with a certain condition/s and that the treating specialist confirmed fully diagnosed, treated and stabilised they will be approved it’s just not the case. People in my honest opinion underestimate the importance placed on thoroughly addressing each condition against the relevant impairment table. This is what Centrelink use to assess you’re impairment rating and how much your condition/s affect your capacity to work through functional impairment. This is why you’re JCA most questions are related back to the impairment table for your specific condition. The responsibility of being approved for the DSP relies solely on the individual to supply the information that is needed to reflect a 20 point serve impairment and a CITW. Also to note it’s states in Centrelink guidelines “A person's self-reported symptoms must not solely be relied on. It would be inappropriate to apply an impairment rating based solely on a person's self-reported functional history if this level of functional impairment is not consistent with the medical evidence available” So everything needs to be supplied in writing from the doctor, I can’t stress enough about supplying all medical evidence that you can refer back to a question, I referenced everything back to a report/s I submitted. Centrelink are happy to collect and act on insufficient reports as they will just decline the rejection at JCA.

Your story seems strange from both my own experience and many other forum members who have been trying to get DSP for years and are entitled to it but get rejected because they are never told what is required by Centrelink. How were you different? One member has been doing what is asked for 2 years now but every time they comply they are told new rules and/or more information needed. 2 YEARS? I took 8 years to win my case due to zero being told to me from day one.

I took 8 years to win my case due to zero being told to me from day one. Centrelink never actually told me what they were looking for, but you only have to spend 10 minutes reading the impairment table to understand it’s based on the functional impairment caused by the disability, having a disability diagnosis is simply not enough to warrant approval. My treating psychiatrist used the exact wording Centrelink used when completing my functional capacity report that Centrelink supply on impairment table definition, and I supplied two independent medical examiners reports. But also I supplied 13 discharge summaries from my psychiatric hospital I have been admitted 13 admissions for 376 days as an inpatient, I also supplied a letter from my previous workers compensation company stating that from February 2016 until December 2018 I seen my treating psychiatrist 177 times, I have also completed trans cranial magnetic stimulation, dialectical behaviour therapy and exposure therapy and was prescribed 18 different medications until we could find the right combination. Everyone of the medication tried was listed in the discharge summaries. I think for me it was easy because I was on the workers compensation system and on that system you see many specialist and have all the reports so I actually submitted 4 reports from 4 different psychiatrist all stating permanent work incapacity and permanent disability. Again the important thing to remember is self reported symptoms have to be evident in the medical reporting or it’s just that self reported. I’m happy to help anyone through the application process for mental health because that’s what I applied with. You have to have comprehensive supporting evidence to be approved for I/P.

Nomadic - I think whats difficult with a lot of the applications is that people often dont realise that their psychologist isnt a clinical one until its too late for a DSP/IP claim. Getting into a psychiatrist- unless you have one already - can be extremely difficult as well.
People with mental health impairments are also notoriously bad at maintaining 'treatment' unfortunately.
I think using the medico legal reports from workers compensation is also good because of how they show functional impairment.
