The current tables and the way they are implemented was a Labor Party initiative, and they have not disavowed it. I doubt that either party major party will be good in this sense. I can tell you, however, that if a person has their serious illness properly documented, then they can get the DSP and perhaps even Indefinite Portability, if they meet the criteria. The issue is that many people, especially the non-manifestly mentally ill, have barriers to collecting the information and understanding what is important and what is not, and are often focused on self-diagnosis (irrelevant) and not what can be documented. I was one of these people, and it was only when I got a reality check that I got DSP. That's right, and it was Howard's Liberal Government in the 90's wanting to make the unemployment figures look better that led to a loosening of the DSP rules which saw a lot of people get on who previously couldn't. So it's kind of the opposite of what you'd instinctively expect; Liberal made it easier, Labor made it harder. But my own personal belief is that everything big that happens regarding Centrelink is more determined by the 'Deep State' element within the public service than the government of the day. The government just sprinkles its own particular flavour over the top. Yes you only need to look at the old TV shows Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister to see how it all works. You can still see them on youtube if you want both a laugh and real life politics.
