Hi All Hope everyone is well
Just a question about UP
Does Centrelink ask the reason you want to go abroad?
For those that have done it what reasons have you said to them?
Is it easier to get now?
Cheers

I doubt that they ask it officially, travel/holiday would be a standard response to a nosey officer. You would need to discuss the criteria with your medical practitioner before applying.

Do you have to have a connection to the country you want to live? (Ie. originate. Have family there. Etc?). Or can you move anywhere in the world? Also in terms of payment Let’s say you move to Serbia. Will your payment be the same anywhere or will it depend where n where you move?

genny if granted UP you can live anywhere and you don't need to have a connection to that country. The pay rate is the same everywhere also. That is the base rate of the DSP plus a part of the supplement.

That will be ok?

Forgive me. I’m getting really confused here. I’m born in Australia. I have dsp. I’m going for unlimited portability soon and plan to move to Serbia. I plan to live there for at least two years. I might cross over the border every now and again. Do I get the base rate for the whole time I’m there? You’re saying my payment might be reduced? I don’t get it. Is everyone who is on portability moving around country to country so they don’t trigger residency? Can I go now to Serbia with only my dsp and get it for 6 months without getting portability. I’m getting so confused here. What would you do in my situation? I want to move to Serbia.

I’m getting so confused here. What would you do in my situation? I want to move to Serbia. Serbia is an agreement country with Australia. If you become a resident of Serbia, that will trigger the social security agreement with Serbia, and you will get the agreement says you will get (probably the same as a Serbian - a pittance). Therefore, move around a bit and don't be resident in Serbia. You can stay there long term just move around to nearby countries every three months or so. No need to tell Centrelink about your travels. If you tell Centrelink you are planning to go to Serbia before you apply for IP, your IP will be denied. Instead they will tell you to take advantage of the agreement. Tell them you want to go to Thailand (and then actually go there so you aren't lying to a government officer). Then after that go to Serbia.

So better to say you’re going to a country that doesn’t have agreement. Stay there a month. Then go to Serbia? What makes residency in Serbia kick in? So just move borders even on a day trip just to get passport stamped? What kind of visa will I ask for in order to stay in Serbia?

Possibly having to apply for a temporary residence permit to stay longer than 90 days during any 180-day period. It could get tricky, though the link below is US specific.
"If you want to stay in Serbia longer than 90 days during any 180-day period, you must apply for a temporary residence permit at the local police station with authority over the place you are staying in Serbia."

So this will mean the IP payment will be affected?

So this will mean the IP payment will be affected? I can't possibly answer that question genny . From the links I've posted for you to take advantage of, it appears that staying in Serbia for two years is not feasible, because you may only be able to stay up to 180 days a year and yes, if applying for the permit and residency is triggered your payment could definitely be affected. The best advice I can give you is to contact the Serbian Embassy in Canberra or Consulate in Sydney and clarify the visa situation to find out if there's any way of staying for two years with short trips abroad without triggering residency. canberra.mfa.gov.rs/consularservices.phpwww.sydney.mfa.gov.rs/consularservicestext.php?subaction=showfull&id=1363155804&ucat=17&template=Headlines&#disqus_thread

How do people in Thailand and other countries do it?

How do people in Thailand and other countries do it? This is the list of agreement countries. Austria | Belgium | Canada | Chile | Croatia | Cyprus | Czech |Denmark | Estonia | Finland | Germany | Greece | Hungary | India | Ireland | Italy | Japan | Korea | Latvia | Malta | Republic of North Macedonia | The Netherlands | New Zealand | Norway | Poland | Portugal | Serbia | Slovak | Slovenia | Spain | Switzerland | United States of America Thailand isn't on the list so anyone with IP does not have to worry about being a Thai resident. They can even lose residency in Australia. If you can maintain residency in Australia, you probably don't have to worry about living in Serbia. But if you lose your residency in Australia, Centrelink will want to know where you are in fact resident. If its Serbia, then the social security agreement is triggered. No one here can tell you for certain how this will play out, because no one wants to trigger a social security agreement. If a social security agreement forged with Thailand and it affected people with IP already there, there would be a pensioner exodus from Thailand.

People can trigger off an agreement living in Switzerland. Then you get a Swiss pension? Would be more $$$
